Gear sorting order

In the Web version of the GC the gear sorting is being done alphabetically. Nicknames are used, or brand/model if no nickname. As an example, I made following list of bikes:
Folding, Fully, Hardtail, Kids, Road, TT. In GC it's sorted in that order. Straightforward.

In GCM however it's quite odd:
In "Gear" tab where I can edit them:
- Road, Kids, Hardtail, Fully, Folding, TT
When adding/removing in activity:
- TT, Folding, Fully, Hardtail, Kids, Road

One sequence is reverse to the other, but what's the sorting criteria? Cannot see it either if looking at brand/model or first use date.
  • Good question. I cannot surmise the sort order either, but I know it's definitely not in the order in which I added the gear items (as opposed to their First Use dates) to the database.

    Workaround

I found this frustrating as my list of running shoes continued to grow. It was further irritating to see retired shoes among my active shoes in the list under the "Gear" tab on GCM.

I wanted some order to my list to group road shoes, trail shoes and retired shoes. Since shoes are the only gear I track, I ended up listing my road shoes as "Shoes", my trail shoes as "Bikes" and my retired shoes as "Other". There's still no discernible logic to the sorting within those three gear groups as you found, but at least I can split my shoes into groups.

If you're only tracking bikes, grouping like that may be of use to you.
  • Hi Lenny,

thanks for your tip! It is definitely a good workaround. Wouldn't work for me though, since I have running shoes too. In "Other" gear I have inline skates, stroller, neoprene.

It is worth mentioning though that the way they handle retired stuff improved a lot some time ago. It doesn't show on in-activity gear list in GCM at all, moved down in "gear editing" in GCM and in GC it's also muted or moved down in some way.

Thanks for that info. I hadn't realized that was updated. It used to be a PIA having to scroll through a long list of active & retired shoes to get to what I wanted. I go through 4 or 5 pair of shoes per year and my list was getting long. One of these days I should just go ahead and delete the retired shoes. It's not like I need that info in GC or GCM any longer.
  • After countless updates to GCM the issue is still there. I've just explained it to the German support on the phone, they promised to forward to the developers.*Crossing fingers*
  • Gear is still not sorted in any understandable order. Quite frustrating :-(
CG on www has alphabetical order which is not ideal but at least easy to understand.

Garmin, please put it finally on your development schedule, this should be an easy fix.
