Auto LiveTrack - Strava Beacon Error

Hi all,

I have already asked this question in the Fenix 3 forum, but got no help there. In the meanwhile I'm sure it's not device related, because I get the same error with Vivoactive HR and FR 735XT.

I use Auto LiveTrack feature. First it worked flawlessly, but then I started getting an error for about every 2nd activity.

In android notification area it shows:
There was an error sharing your LiveTrack session with Strava Beacon.
and when I click on it:
Strava Beacon Error
Strava Beacon appears to be disabled. Re-enable Beacon using the Manage link.

I couldn't find anything similar here in forum or elsewhere in web. If it pops up, the only way I found to enable LiveTrack after all is manually with lots of clicks. The thing is, I do have a Strava (non-premium) account and it gets syncronized with Garmin Connect but I never enabled Beacon and don't want to. I have no idea what "Manage link" is, cannot find it anywhere.

I assume the problem is either with Connect Mobile, Connect in general, or my account.

Does anyone has similar experience or has ideas how to fix that? Any suggestions are appreciated.
  • I'm seeing this as well

I see this too. It seems random to me, but might be every-other activity.

I suspect that it's triggered by starting an activity just as I go beyond the range of my home Wi-Fi. I've attempted to test that theory by disabling Wi-Fi on my phone before heading out on one run and starting the activity right at my front door on another. Both of those activities started LiveTrack without error. This isn't definitive proof, especially with all the various bits of software being updated independently, but might at least be a clue.

I'm running the latest release software on a FR 735 (version 7.10), a Samsung Galaxy S7 ( Android 7.0 as released by Verizon), and Garmin Connect Mobile (version 3.15.)

I don't have any type of Strava account and have never configured one with Garmin Connect.

  • Hi Pete,

thanks for your information! I have never thought of it but you're right - the auto LiveTrack fails as I go out of Wi-Fi range either at home or at work.

My next step is to disable Strava pairing. But since you never had it I doubt now it will help. Will try it either way. I'll also try your Wi-Fi trick.

    As to devices/versions:
With Fenix 3 it started beginning of January I think. It had FW v8.20
    Vivoactive had FW v3.40
    FR735XT is at FW v7.10
GC Mobile is currently v3.16, but it repeats over several updates already.
  • Disabling Wi-Fi seems to avoid this problem

Disabling Wi-Fi before I leave home, which forces my phone onto the cellular network, seems to completely avoid this issue.

I'll report it to Garmin Support, since these are not official support forums and it doesn't seem that many Garmin employees read them. (I wouldn't either if I were in their place, given the extremely discurteous tone of so many of the posts.)

    Strava Beacon Error

I run with a Fenix 3 HR and Samsung Galaxy S7 and I use Garmin Connect....I starting have the same issues much in the same way as mentioned in previous post. I have also experienced Live Track working flawlessly and suddenly not working. I reset the email addresses and Live Track began working again at least for now.

I have no idea what the "Strava Beacon" is and I don't have a Strava account. I would like to see an answer from Garmin on this issue.

Auto LiveTrack - Strava Beacon Error

I just started having the same issue after upgrading the Garmin connect app on my Android for the first time in a while. I use auto-start live track, have Strava integration with a non-premium account and have Strava Beacon disabled. The suggestion of disabling Wi-Fi is a good one which I will try, however I'm curious if there has been any response from Garmin to Pete's support request?
  • I tried contacting Garmin support - few emails and a call - with very unsatisfactory results. 1st level support don't seem to be able to grasp the problem. Neither do they forward it to the 2nd level. They best I got was a multipage manual on how to restore bluetooth connection between the watch and the smartphone, which was working fine anyways.

Still, there seem to be some progress. Even though I am still getting the same error, sometimes live track starts after it, as it seems. (emails being sent etc...)
  • One year after the first report. Countless updates to Garmin Connect, firmwares, and devices themselves. The bug is still there.

In the meantime I've tried several devices myself, including Fenix 3, Fenix 3HR, Fenix 5X, FR735, Vivoactive, Vivoactive HR. With different phones, device FW, GC versions. Strava Beacon Error keeps popping up. Always consistent with "bad/nonexistent wifi coverage" scenario described above, when starting activities just outside of the home/office.

The Support was extremely unhelpful so far.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1298949.png
  • Still happens to me as well. I work around it by going a bit farther down the road before starting my run. (Warming up is good, right? :))

I definitely wish that the Connect app would retry if the initial attempt to start a Live Track fails.

  • I have re-submitted the bug via the support form 2 weeks ago. No response. Talked to German support on the phone today, the guy is going to forward the issue to the developers. *Crossing fingers*...
