Pedometer and Sleeping

Hello

I have a Forerunner 235. I tried to turn off the "activity tracking" because i am just interested in Run, Sleeps and HR functions. I would like to know if i turn off this function i keep to get sleeps analysis (i dont want to use the pedometer as well)

My goal is to reduce battery draining, that's why i want to disable the useless pedometer.

Thanks

Both pedometer and sleep use the accelerometer sensor. If you disable it, then you have neither steps nor sleep. That said, I'm not sure if disabling activity tracking actually disables the accelerometer. I suspect it just disables the watch software functionality associated with activity tracking. And since sleep analysis is done in Garmin Connect and not the device itself, disabling activity tracking does not necessarily mean disabling sleep analysis. I haven't tried it, so cannot confirm.

As to the battery drain I do not think that the accelerometer has any significant impact on it. Even if it really could be disabled hardware-wise the possible gain would be not noticable given that GPS and optical HRM consume significantly more power. I once had a Garmin Swim watch which had accelerometers and could go for a year on a single coincell battery. Another example is the Garmin Vivofit, which uses accelerometers constantly for 24x7 activity tracking and similarly can go for a year on a single battery.

Thanks for replying. Will wait for further opinions / suggestions
  • My goal is to reduce battery draining,
The FR235 Owner's Manual offers several suggestions.

Obviously, not having the full range of features (including some of which you may actually want) is the compromise you make.

that's why i want to disable the useless pedometer.
There is no pedometer per se, in the hardware as a battery-powered component independent of other features. As tmk2 has already explained, both step counting and sleep tracking is premised on analysis of data from the accelerometer (a hardware component) which detects and measures movement. In particular, your Garmin fitness wearable does not make the determination (let alone perform any analysis) of your status with regard to sleep; with activity tracking enabled, your FR235 monitors and records movement around the clock even when you're not tracking a sports activity with it, and after the movement data is uploaded to the cloud-based Garmin Connect service, it is Garmin Connect that will use the data (as well as other information) to draw conclusions with regard to your sleep and present them.

You can conserve battery life on your FR235 by disabling activity tracking so that data is not monitored and recorded all day, but then you won't have any data to upload and analyse for any purpose in the category of activity tracking. It's not up to you to pick and choose individual features to enable or disable.
