Muted whatsapp convos coming through to my 735 watch

I'm part of a large group on whatsapp (40 people, constant mindless chatter which I tend to read through once a day, nothing really important. the group has been muted for years and will remain that way)
I'm getting all these notificatoins to my watch, is there a way to stop this?

currently using a samsung phone but I hope to get my iPhone fixed very soon. the watch is the FR735

you'll need to mute and untick "show notifications" in Whatsapp. If your phone shows any kind of notifications (Whatsapp 'mute' only mute sound alerts, it can still shows notification on status bar) it will be delivered to your watch.

sorted, swapped back to my iPhone and I now get whatsapp notifications to the watch, except for muted conversations.
don't know wether it's the android system at fault here or maybe because I was using an awfully basic phone, the samsung j1 mini?
