Live Track Auto Start Capable Devices

There was an update to Garmin Connect today for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.garmin.android.apps.connectmobile&feature=search_result&hl=en) and one of the new features was an Auto Start for Live Track which is something that would be very useful for me.

However, on the app I can't find the setting and in the app help it states that it's only for Auto Start-capable devices. I have a fenix 3 so I think that would be capable but does anybody have any idea what the capable devices would be?

Thanks!
  • The same for me and my Vivoactive HR. Can't find any new setting on my phone after the update. Looks like a cool feature.

That sounds interesting, I sure know what is Live Track and how it works, but would anyone be kind enough to explain me what's the difference with the new auto start feature? Thanks.

Now you have to start Live Track manually from your phone every time. If you read the Help after the update of GCM it says:
Begin a LiveTrack session without opening the mobile app. Automatically share your location with friends when you start an activity from an Auto Start-capable device.

The big mystery remains: what are these Auto Start capable devices?
  • I just noticed this feature as well with the latest Android GC Mobile update and I'm interested in using it. I'm running an Edge 510 but I don't have my device with me today to tinker. I'm not sure what the "auto start compatible device" caveat means; is the Edge 510 an auto start compatible device since it does have the Live Track feature? I also don't see an "enable auto start" or any such feature in the new app like the notification for it shows. If my Edge 510 is compatible, how do I enable or disable auto start?
  • Wondering same thing. I got the app update as well.

That's kind of the issue. I can't find any documentation from Garmin that lists auto-start capable devices. My thinking is that if you have an auto-start capable device you would see that feature in the Live Track screen, and if you don't see it, then you're device isn't capable. However, I have a fenix 3 and I really would think that device would work.

From the GC app help this is what we should be seeing in the Live Track screen if we have auto-start

  • Autostart compatable devices

It would appear from the following release that it is only compatible with the Edge 520, 820, and 1000 as they use bluetooth ble to connect to phones.

Its a shame as it would not be hard for the app itself to select livetrack on all the time for any ride. Mind you I would rather they work on basic problems like viewing live trac always defaults to statute, ongoing flakey bluetooth connection, and Connect picking up what device, course, etc has been used from the activity data downloaded rather than to manually select it in connect.

I've just selected it on my phone (paired with my Edge 820), I'll try it out tomorrow (if the boss lets me out for a ride). :p
  • But the Edge 820 just received an update:
Changes made from version 3.20 to 4.10:

    • New Feature! Added support for LiveTrack Auto Start.

So probably more devices might receive an update supporting Auto Start. Let's hope so.
  • My Vivoactive HR just received it's update to 3.30 enabling Auto LiveTrack.
