Location service forced after update

Why on earth is my Garmin connect app forcing me to keep location service (on accurate level!) on to keep my Fenix 3 HR connected to my phone?!? Maybe you have realized that the GPS sucks at the watch itself and have to track me via phone? No matter what is the reason, this is certainly not something I accepted when I purchased my watch... So I would suggest you to either give me full refund for my watch (yes that is practically the only feature that actually works on this device) or patch your app so that it won't need the permission.

Ok, now that I finally found this thread I will try to keep emotions low but I want to give my emphasis on the importance of the original request. I experience the same behavior of my vivosmart HR as it was described before: until the beginning of this week, I was able to synchronize my device with my Android phone without having location services turned on. - Now that's not possible anymore.

Now here is the thing: whoever problem or change this was, GARMIN, you guys have to fix this as soon as possible otherwise I predict you will lose a lot of your business here in Europe and probably in other parts of the world, too. Probably it's a cultural thing but over here, data privacy and tracking of location IS an issue and for many people a no-go so we need an option to have this turned off! Otherwise , this is a very fast and certain way to turn happy customers into leavers. It would really be a pity, I did like my device so far.

Ahh, and one more advice: don't wait until this goes to press or social media, please take this issue serious!

I agree with you but ......
Few procent means nothing, if few clients are unhappy after some changes then company dont care.

For me its lesson for future if they dont fix this very fast then i never buy garmin products any more. I have already few brands on my blacklist.

We would not be able to explain why users did not have to have location services on prior to the lasted Garmin Connect Mobile update while still running 6.0, as this was a change introduced by Android with the Marshmallow update. We would recommend reaching out to our support team (information in signature) to investigate this further.

Question is who should know ....

If Garmin dont know then we should afraid every single update because the dont know what they doing.

I already send this info to Garmin and after that received some manual how i should connect my phone to vivoactive. Probably nobody read my email just send manual.

I don't want to be expert of all problems with my watch i just want to be user and everything should be fine.

That's fair enough – so if Garmin, being the maker of both your watch and the Garmin Connect Mobile app, advises that:
    • your watch is compatible with mobile devices running Android‑4.3 or later (implicitly including Android‑6.x) that support Bluetooth Low Energy mode; and
    • Location service has to be enabled on Android‑6.x, as a requirement for whatever technical reason –*e.g. Google made it so in the specifications for BLE device scanning in Marshmallow – for your watch to be (re)connected with the Garmin Connect Mobile app running on it,

then, as the user, you should just accept the information at face value and everything should be fine.

If you enable Location service on your Android‑6.x device – irrespective of your personal preferences – and your watch still won't connect with the Garmin Connect Mobile app, then that is not fine, and Garmin has a problem for which it has to answer out of commercial/service obligation to you as a customer.

Protestations in the form of, “But I want it to work this way!” do not create obligation on the part of the product manufacturer and software provider, to accommodate your preferences out of privacy concerns or whatever other reason.

    This is joke???

    This is not true.

All time explanation this is Google fault because they change something ......

My Samsung S6 after update new firmware (few week ago) not requires Location service to be on and this Android 6.
Everything was fine to update Garmin Connect Mobile to version 3.9 after update synchronization requires Location service need to be on.

After many tests with poor results i decide to downgrade my Garmin Connect Mobile to 3.8 (downloaded not from Google market) and miracle with 3.8 everything works fine again.

Now im using 3.8 and Localization services turned off.

Now is Garmin fault for sure!!!

So what happened to wanting to just be the user, whose place is to be told how things work (so that “everything should be just fine”) and what their/his/her/your limitations are?

The whole point of being a user is that it's not up to you to decide the scope, implementation and constraints. Google made a decision. Garmin decided not to get around it, or maybe it experimented with getting around it and then decided to switch back. Either way, your preferences do not matter as a user.

For the record, I don't like leaving Location service enabled on my mobile devices, and so I don't. However, I equally dislike people who jump up and down thinking they are party to decision-making and have a say in things that affect them, when they actually don't.

    This is empty discusion.
  • I also can prove that this is Garmin fault.

Before this faulty update I had a full freedom in matter of connecting my Fenix 3. I could connect it with/without navigation enabled, hell, even without disabled internet/wi-fi. Now it is a total mess. I have a lot of problems in term of connecting and syncing. Many really bizarre problems like: GC doesn't recognize my wi-fi as web connect, or mentioned compulsion of enabled location services.

This last issue is not a point of Android 6.0. I have 6.0.1 since a few months and just right after an update I got this baggage of problems. I advice just downgrade GC to earlier version and wait for a fix. Then all the problems disappears just like with sanctifying grace. But, I spotted one issue with this solution. I lost an option to sync my watch to PC by Garmin Express, but If I have to choose between working GC and GE, I'm choosing working GC. :)

Au contraire, it's your prerogative to complain all you want. However, you don't have the “right” or entitlement to anyone else's – including fellow users', owners', consumers', and Garmin's – agreement or support with either your claims or your point of view. You don't have the “right” or entitlement to being consulted, let alone having any direct influence or control, over changes that technology providers such as Google and Garmin decide to make, even if you paid money to buy Android and Garmin devices.

I'm more than willing to acknowledge you're unhappy with the situation, and I don't particularly want to change your mind or how you feel; stay unhappy for as long as you want. I was simply pointing out that Google made a technology decision requiring the Location service to be enabled when scanning for BLE devices – and I'd be happy to be proven incorrect if you can point me to an item of Google's technical documentation that tells me it isn't the case (and that Garmin and other technology vendors were lying or mistaken). Your user experience of having been able to circumvent the requirement at some point in time with some device does not disprove the Google made such a decision; therefore, you can choose to either accept that decision, or stop using Android Marshmallow.

As for whether it is possible for Garmin, Fitbit, etc. as app developers to circumvent the new requirement, that's entirely their decision to make and not yours – and that was my point. You're only wrong insofar as thinking you ought to have some control or authority in the matter. If Garmin has made a design decision not to (or no longer to) circumvent Google's requirement, then again as a user you can choose to either accept it or stop being a user. Satisfaction on your terms is not a choice available to you, and you're in no position to make it happen; complaining impotently and incessantly won't help. That's the discussion. Not a collaboration on how to help you secure satisfaction, but simply analysing the situation.

If you still want to complain, that's fine by me. Carry on.
