Bluetooth connected but set-up fails - Forerunner 630

I'm using Android M on my Xiaomi Mi5 phone. Connect v.3.8.0.1.

The watch says its paired & Bluetooth status on the watch says 'connected' but sync has stopped working.

If I try to sync using the watchface screen, it says 'transferring' & 'Transfer complete', the connect app gives the 'syncing with forerunner 630 ' and that completes ok, but the connect app still has not been updated with my latest activity. Yesterdays activity is in my history on the watch, but will simply not upload to the app.

Already re-booted the phone twice. Uninstalled & re-installed the Connect app from playstore twice. Hard reset the watch.

Any thoughts ?

update

...cleared the app data in phone settings.
Exactly the same as before. Does an immediate sync, but nothing updated from yesterday.
