Phone app display

I mainly use my Forerunner 230 to log walking but the phone app will not show a walking snapshot as default.
It says :-
'Based on your devices or propfile these snapshots will provide you with the data that's relevant to your activities' but walking is not listed in the snapshot list. I can tick steps, swimming, running etc
Is there a way for it to allow me to select walking?
  • No but I classify my walking activities as running and then they are there. It works as long as you don't do both.
  • Thanks Phil

Seems a poor way to have to set up an expensive piece of kit :(
  • It's a workaround but an added benefit is you get cadence stats with running that you don't get with walking.
  • Even if we accept that the Forerunner‑230 is “an expensive piece of kit” prima facie, it still would not imply that the device is designed, marketed or reasonably expected to be more general-purpose. It comes with specialised sport activity profiles for running and cycling, and also allows for generic ‘other’ timed activities with GPS and/or HR tracking. I don't see why a consumer ought to assume or imagine a GPS-equipped fitness and activity tracking device would provide support for walking as a specialised activity type.

In any case, the Connect‑IQ platform allows you to develop and/or install custom apps designed to suit particular purposes (including walking), but what you're asking for pertains to the Garmin Connect Mobile app and how it presents information, outside of what the watch itself does and captures.

By the way, my FR235 is even more “expensive”, and I equally don't get specialised support from it for walking as a fitness activity, so if anything, I ought to have more of a grievance than you do.
  • Are you saying that walking is not a fitness activity?
I can assure you that walking 15 plus miles a day is very good for you :o

All I meant was that it seems strange that walking is selectable as a view but not a default view option.

I am in no way running my Garmin product down. I have happily used Garmin products for years for cycling, Geocaching etc etc

I'm saying it's not an activity the Forerunner‑230 was either designed or marketed to offer specialised support, irrespective of the retail price for that model.

My Swiss chronograph is more expensive again than my FR235 by many multiples, yet does not even offer a time-of-day alarm, let alone support for tracking walking as an activity. What I'm saying is price has nothing to do with it, and neither has the relevance of walking as an activity to fitness. Swimming is equally (if not more) relevant to fitness, and the FR230/235 does not provide specialised support for that either, even though you can wear it while swimming without drowning or destroying the device.

(Yes, the Garmin Connect Mobile app will allow you to select the Swimming snapshot, but the watch won't capture any swimming data, other than what a custom Connect‑IQ app could purport to record as such and upload to Garmin Connect.)

On a 230 you can record a walk as a walk - With a Connect IQ App!

Hike (Hiking or outdoor walking - pick how you want it recorded before you start)

In GCM, you'll see it as a walk or a Hike....
