Time in Zones: 'no data available'

Former Member

Morning all,
I noticed a few weeks ago a new field arrived in the Garmin Connect app below the HR, pace, VO and GCT charts, called 'Time in Zones'. it must be the most requested feature on this forum and so it looks like Garmin are finally supplying... but it just says 'No Data Available', for every run, despite my zones being set up. Does anyone know what's going on here? Is it working for others?
Thanks vm.

Sure time in zone was available for my forerunner 305 in garmin training center, when I bought it 8(?) years ago. If so, it's not so much adding a new feature as reinstating one they dropped.
  • Well, obviously Garmin Training Center – which is a different software application from Garmin Connect – had the feature of calculating time in zones using the heart rate data recorded for a workout submitted for processing, irrespective of which device model that recorded the corresponding FIT file.

Garmin Connect does not offer the feature (i.e. will not perform the calculation), irrespective of which device model recorded the FIT file that has been uploaded. As far as I'm aware, the software application never had the feature, so it's not a matter of “reinstating” a feature that was dropped from it.

However, Garmin Connect will happily present time-in-zones information that was calculated by particular Garmin device models and recorded in the FIT files. The ">‑235, for example, has the feature">Forerunner‑235, for example, has the feature in its onboard application/firmware straight “out of the box”. The FR305 never had the feature (i.e. will not perform the calculation and record the results in the FIT file), and so it's not a matter of “reinstating” a feature that was dropped from the model, either.

You as the end-user may have “lost” something to which you previously had access, because of changes in your personal IT landscape (including changing software applications from Garmin Training Center to Garmin Connect for FIT file analysis and activity reporting), but that does not define the individual components (applications, devices, etc.) and the feature sets they respectively offer. I'm sure you prefer to think from your personal (or end-user's) perspective, but the rest of us fellow customers who participate here are not you, and not a stakeholder in your satisfaction with what you get from Garmin, and so we can logically and reasonably take a technical perspective when replying.

Mr Smug, are you in the right business, dear? Would you like a cup of tea and a lie down?
  • The only devices that support the Time in Zone feature are:
    • fenix 3
    • fenix 3 HR
    • Edge 520
    • epix
    • Forerunner 225
    • Forerunner 230
    • Forerunner 235
    • Forerunner 630
    • Forerunner 920XT
In addition to the Time in Zone feature the Edge 520 shows power zones in a similar chart.

If you do not have a device that is listed above you will not see the option for Time in Zone in Garmin Connect or Garmin Connect mobile at this time.

Thanks for the clarification. This is quite disappointing. For this reason I will be avoiding garmin products in the future. The Wahoo app as well as my crappy Fitbit can show me this information. It seems unreasonable that garmin would limit this to a specific set of devices.

    Hello,

I disagree, my friend has Edge 1000 and he can see Time in zones, on my Edge 810 this is not possible?? Why? Is this problem due the firmware on Edge 810 or settings on garmin connect application?

    Regards, Tomas
  • The Time In Zones feature was recently added to the firmware of the Edge 1000 and therefore it visible on the device and in Garmin Connect. It has not been added to the firmware of the 810 therefore it does not have that feature and it does not appear in Garmin Connect.
  • I disagree,
What, with a post that was made almost eleven months ago, which was no doubt correct at the time? OK, knock yourself out.

Ah. Thank you for pointing that out; I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
