Phone GPS needed for sync with Fenix3????

Dear Community, Dear Garmin,

I recently got the update of my Sony Z5 from Android 5 to 6.
Ever since this update the GCM app tells me it needs GPS of my phone to connect to my GPS Watch.
This can only be bogus, right? What purpose would that serve?
Does anyone know how to overcome this issue?
I already removed the app completely and reinstalled it, but same issue. Phone reset to factory and new setup, same issue.
Luckily I do have a Tablet that still runs Android 5 where it works just fine. I have been using smart notifications but now I need to stop using that.

The thing is I hardly ever use GPS and now I would need it for my GPS watch? That doesn't make any sense to me also I hate being taken advantage of by sucking me dry for my data. If that's the case, I would be a serious issue for me with Garmin.

Still hoping someone has a workaround and this is just a bug.

At least some versions of Android 6 require that "location services" be on for BLE to work. That's what you are seeing - a message that says you need it on. This was something done in Android itself, so it's not anything with GCM, or anything Garmin can do anything about.

Dear Dough,

Thanks for your reply, I understand what you are describing.
Unfortunately I makes using Smart Notification etc useless for me. Shame as this was a nice feature. If Garmin can not do anything about it it's fine with me, it certainly makes the competitors much more interesting again to me.
