Default Sync only works with location services turned on

Former Member
Former Member
I own a FR235 and a Nexus 5x.
Since few weeks I'm only able to sync when location services are turned on.
This problem was introduced after an update of Garmin Connect. It first asked for location service permissions, and then keeped asking to turn location services on.
Also a fresh install of the phone an GC did not help.
Garmin support does not respond via email.
Am I the only one with this problem?

Thanks

It works on Android 6. I have many Android 6 users. Actually, 2338 of my 5322 active users (44%) have Android

Just for the heck of it, I tried your app with my vivosmart hr ( know it's not meant for this device),
But sadly it doesn't work for me. Once out of BT range; no reconnect.
Hopeful thinking on my part, but thanks for the work anyway.

But I agree, Garmin should fix this. My gear fit 2 does not require location services on, and will reconnect
Within seconds of coming back into BT range - everytime.

Yes, I have only tested it on Fenix 3.

But users report that it also works on Fenix 3 HR, Vivoactive HR, ForeRunner 235.

Yes, I have only tested it on Fenix 3. Garmin could update firmware on other devices to work like the Fenix 3 and then use my method in GCM with pinging the device.

Just FYI. After some more testing, I found that the app does partially work.

It will reconnect the vivosmart hr, so that the device works as a trusted device and keeps the phones screen unlocked, but the device will not sync with GCM and the music controls/notifications don't work.

In the vivosmart hr bluetooth screen, the status is: waiting for app.
    whatever that means.

    Hi Rbj26,

which phone and Android version do you have?

I have one more trick for my app. It is to fool Garmin Connect to think that the phone was found by the watch. This will wake up Garmin Connect when you get near the phone.

I have made a new version with this option ("Use GCM popup").

    Hi Rbj26,

I think your watch is waiting for the Garmin Connect app. I have one more trick for my app which was used in the beginning but is disabled now. It is to fool Garmin Connect to think that the phone was found by the watch. On Fenix 3 there is a function to find the phone. This worked, but the "problem" with this function was that a pop-up is shown on the phone.

I can make a special beta version of my app where this function can be optionally enabled, if you are willing to test it with your Vivosmart HR? Just send a PM with your email address so I can invite you for beta-testing.

    Phone: LG G3
    Ver: 6.0.1mm (rooted)

    Sure I'll test. PM sent
  • Actually, I am thinking why you don't put checkbox 'My phone reconnect fine without rescanning', so at least lucky people can have a break. It would be not much work on your part.

It would be a cool feature. I have Z3C + Epix and it works fine. Now i got access to Android 6 and i am waiting for upgrade when GCM will not need to keep my location services active.

Try my app which runs in the background and keeps connection to the watch without location services (also works in Android 6). It is tested on Fenix 3, but maybe also works with Epix:

My app keeps Bluetooth connection on Android 6 without location services

Review from a user on Android 6:

Try it. Also for other Android 4.4 and 5.

    Garmin 235 Location Serv

    Hello all,

I have the Garmin 235 and a Note 4 (Verizon version) and when I did new update to Marshmallow Android 6.0 my Garmin Sync wasn't working because GPS had to be turned on at ALL times. I couldn't find any way to solve this issue. The only way I was able to fix the issue was to DOWNGRADE my Note 4 back to Lollipop 5.1 and now my Garmin watch is working perfectly. I was also having a lot of problems with my phone because of the new software. So I would suggest to downgrade your phone to Lollipop. A heads up, downgrading software voids your phone warranty but I did not care because my Note 4 was working so SLOW and it would freeze up. If you need some help downgrading send me a reply. There's some help on XDA Forums and also on YouTube to downgrade software. Hope this helps.
