Smart notifications no longer working on Fenix 3

I use a Fenix 3 running the latest firmware paired with a Moto X 2nd generation running Marshmallow.
The combination has always worked very well. However, over the last week, while syncing and widgets still work fine, smart notifications have stopped coming through. I got it to start once by reinstalling GCM and restarting both watch and phone, but two hours later it stopped working again and there has not been a single notification in the last two days. This coincides with the updates to 3.3.1 (working rarely) and 3.3.2 (failing completely). I have hard reset the F3 and all that achieved was duplicating half of my activities in the last month on Connect.

Anybody else seeing similar issues, on the F3 or other platforms?

    No notifications

I am having similar issues. I have owned the fenix 3 for about three weeks. At first I was getting all notifications (text messages, WhatsApp, incoming and missed phone calls) from my LG G3. For the past week or so, I have not been getting any notifications. I have turned the watch on and off, reset and re-paired the Bluetooth on my phone and nothing.

The F3 does communicate fitness statistics to Garmin Connect, so I know the connections is there. It's just notifications that are gone.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
  • Possible solution for not receiving notifications

Let me cite my recent post from the Fenix 3 thread with regards notification issue.

'I have experience using my F3 (fw 6.50 & 6.80) with a phone running on Android 5.0.2 LRX22G Lollipop version. During the day BT is on and I have no issues with receiving notifications, but there's a condition.

Since December 2015, when purchased my watch, I noted that when the BT was switched off for the night and next morning switched on BT again the notifications did not came through. I figured out if before switching on BT on my F3, I go into phone's setting > installed apps > downloaded > Connect and clear the app cache > switch on BT on both F3 and phone it resolves the problem for me.

From my point of view, this is not a normal operation as users should not go and clear up the Connect app cache every single day. Is there anyone out there who just switches off BT on phone and F3 and next time when BT is back on both devices notifications are received?'
  • Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but it didn't work. Perhaps there is something subtle wrong manifesting in different ways on different phones/OS versions (memory overwriting or some such).

Thanks for the idea. I tried what you suggested but it didn't work for me either. I contacted customer service yesterday but I haven't heard back since.

I may do a hard reset if I don't hear back soon but I want to wait. I don't want to risk breaking something else.
  • I've updated my F3 to 6.90 and GCM updated to 3.4.1.1
I re-paired and rebooted, and notifications are coming through, but not behaving as they did before; everything says Subtitle in the second line, and I can't dismiss notifications from the watch.

    Still Moto X 2nd Gen/Marshmallow
  • Smart notifications became unreliable with the last update to GCM, v 3.4.1.1. Prior to, notifications were not a problem. I do get some notifications, but some email and texts don't show so I can no longer count on it.

I am on Android 5.0 and I discovered that I can go to the Apps menu in Settings, select Bluetooth, clear its data and cache and things seem to work well for a while. It's not perfect becase the issue comes back, but at least I found this to be a partial solution.

    No notifications

I've just bought Fenix 3. Installed GCM v3.4.1.2, updated watch firmware to v6.9. Sync works well, I can install new watch apps, BUT I don't get any notifications to my Fenix watch.
Set notifications permissions for GCM, added apps to GCM notifications list, but still nothing. Cleared apps cache, restarted phone, watch.. nothing.
By the way, I have Pebble Time watch and there is no any problem with notifications.

    Nexus 5, Android 6.0.1

UPD: Аfter a while, I've started to get notifications from Telegram on my Fenix. I hope it won't break down.

    No notifications at all

    Hi,
I've a Garmin F3 since March 2015 and always worked very well with Sony Xperia Z3.

Then I changed my phone to Sony Xperia Z5 (4 or 5 months ago) and don't know why but I haven't notifications since then.

    F3 FW version : 6.90
    Xperia Z5 Android version : 6.0 32.1.A.1.185

Any sugestions ? I already uninstalled Garmin Connect and reinstalled it but still no notifications. I have all notifications active in Garmin Connect...

I have a smart watch that became only a watch...I missed the smart part !

    Thanks
  • Are you on Android 6? Because on my Xperia Z5 Compact, after update to Android 6, I had to check and set correct the App Permissions for the Connect Mobile.
