Brand new Edge 520 cannot be added to Garmin Connect via Android App

Hi,

After 5 years of heavy use my Edge 500 died. I figured this was a good life so upgraded to the new Edge 520.

I specifically got this unit because I want to transfer stuff wirelessly to avoid wear and tear on the USB port which is what finally did for my old 500.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S3 (i9300) running Android 4.4. Installed the Garmin Connect App on it. Followed the pairing instructions. I can see the Edge 520 in the phone's list of paired bluetooth devices.

Now, whenever I turn the Edge 520 on, it detects the phone and tells me it's connected, then shows the solid bluetooth icon top of the screen. However, when I open the Garmin Connect App on my phone and visit the 'Garmin Devices' screen all I see is my old Edge 500 device. It says there are no devices paired, despite the fact the Edge 520 is shown in the O/S's list of paired devices.

I hit the '+' sign on the 'Devices' screen in the Garmin Connect App thinking I can add the already connected Edge 520. Instructions tell me to perform the bluetooth pairing process again. So I unpair, and re-pair. Doesn't help.

Given the Garmin Connect App (and also online via the website) doesn't know about my new Edge 520 I cannot send any courses wirelessly to it. What?! This was a major incentive in buying this thing! :(

Please help: how do I get the Android Garmin Connect app to register the fact there's an Edge 520 connected to it and show in my list of Garmin devices so I can send routes to it?

Failing that, how do I manually add the device? I don't see anywhere on the Garmin Connect website to do this. Please don't tell me to use Garmin Express on a Window's PC, I run Linux. Again, major incentive for the 520 was that you aren't meant to need a Windows PC to connect/sync/update firmware/etc.

Thanks! :)

    Ditto

I have exactly the same problem - did you manage to fix this?
  • No

Sadly not. The only way to get your new, fancy, wireless Garmin Edge to register with their fancy online service that can by wirelessly sync'd via your phone is...

... to find a USB wire, and a Windows computer (Linux won't do) and join them using Garmin Express. Hopeless! :(

    @Rob_in,
I just spoke with an Edge tester here at Garmin. As of Edge version 4.10, software updates are sent to the Edge over the mobile app's bluetooth classic channel. News to me too! :) So the question is, what version is your Edge currently running? BTW, the latest version available, as of this writing, is 5.20, per the sticky thread on this sub-forum: https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?534-Edge-520
  • I have an Edge 810, which I had linked with my Samsung tablet (Android 4.2.2). I had no issues when I did that. This weekend I decided I wanted to link it to my phone (2013 MotoX w/5.1.1) instead, I had similar problems getting the Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM) to recognize the 810 was connected. After much playing around and re-pairing the phone and edge unit, I decided to give up and turn it off. I still had both devices as pairded when I gave up. To my surprise, a little later when I turned my edge 810 back on, it magically connected and synced with my phone. Puzzled, I did a little more digging to find out what I did differently. So far, it appears that there is a difference in the units ability to sync with the phone depending on what state bluetooth was in when my Edge 810 was powered on.

Edge 810 bluetooth disabled when powered on:
edge will not sync with phone no mater how much I cycle bluetooth on either the phone or the 810.
Pairing will seem to hang on the phone.

Edge 810 bluetooth enabled when powered on:
I could get the two devices to sync regardless of which unit I disabled and re-enabled bluetooth on.

I want to do a little more troubleshooting to see if I can reliably recreate the issue, but I would suggest the following steps to see if you can get it to work.

    1. Enable bluetooth on the phone
    2. Enable bluetooth on your edge device
    3. power off your edge device
    4. restart your edge device
    5. re-pair the two devices (if they are not already paired)
    6. See if GCM will show connected

After this worked, I ran through the same steps with my wife's edge 810 and her Moto X also. In both cases, if bluetooth was off when the edge was started, it would not connect to the phone.
