WARNING - Garmin Connect Mobile for Android now shows your birthday

Google Play just updated my Garmin Connect Mobile app, and I was startled (and dismayed) to discover the new version displayed my birthdate in my profile.

I immediately set my profile privacy go "only me".

Previously only my age was displayed, and that's how I wanted it.

Knowing your date of birth makes it a lot easier for someone to steal your identity, and having mine stolen again is not something I'm willing to risk. Once is one time too many.
  • Thanks for pointing this out. Doesn't show in the web version, just gives age. Turning it off for now in my profile as well. Please can this be fixed?
  • The only other way around it without locking down your profile is to Un Tick "Show Age" under Connect Profile Settings via the web.

The problem is I'd like to show my age. I'm a bit proud of how much I can still do at age 72, and I'd like to be an inspiration to others showing that lots of activity really does help you live long and enjoy it.

I made my profile private, and I won't be changing that. I'm just glad I never put my real name in my profile.

Garmin's public release of personally identifying information shows they can't be trusted with it. I would remove my bithdate from my private profile it that were possible, but neither the website nor GCM will let me do that.

If Garmin has tied fixing this ongoing security breach to their regular release cycle, that just shows how insensitive they are. There are probably thousands of Garmin customers who don't use GCM and are unaware that Garmin is giving out info about them that banks, credit bureaus, pharmacies, insurance companies, and even Social Security use to screen callers.

Update: After at least two GCM updates, GCM now no longer shows your birthdate. I'm still angry that it ever did, but I've relented enough to make my profile public again.
