Garmin AOD needs improvement

I can't be the only one who uses AOD, and can't get around the idea of having to lift your wrist to see the time. Whats the point of having a great display if it can't be "displayed" to the people around you. Your chosen display is part of your own personality.

Now the issue. Most of Garmin's own displays have terrible AOD options. Either it's just too basic or its so pixelated that I don't want to use it.

The watch faces specific for the Epix Gen 2 which I own looks amazing in AOD and I can clearly see it in the day. The general look remains the same and it's not reduced to two clock arms and a pixelated mess.

Can we please get more people to comment on this. Garmin's own watch faces are great and they can surley make it more interesting and better quality in AOD mode. We treasure these expensive watches and want to flaunt them.

Please Garmin, do better

  • It would be helpful if you could say which watch you own.

  • An Epix Gen 2 but my post is for all AMOLED displays

  • We treasure these expensive watches and want to flaunt them.

Is that the reason why you bought this watch?

The Epix is a sports watch. This means that the people who use it for its actual purpose (recording sports activities) are usually interested in the best possible battery life. The disadvantage of an AMOLED display is the power consumption. In order not to consume too much power, there are restrictions. This is why the battery lasts so long. The alternative would be to charge the battery much more often. But this is not really an alternative for a sports watch.

  • To answer your question, NO. This is my 5th Garmin watch. I don't see myself buying a smart watch ever. I don't even use the smart notifications on my Garmin.

You are totally missing the point of my post. You are commenting just for the sake of saying something like you do on many posts. This is not social media, please respect that and make sure you understand the post before commenting.

If you actually took the time to read my post before replying, you will see that I mentioned that Garmin's own watch faces for the Epix Gen 2 work great and still look very good with AOD. If they can do it with those, why not with the rest of them? They don't affect the battery that much, and it's "in-house" development, I'm not asking for 3rd party apps to do better.

Garmin can do it, they have done it. I just want them to put some effort into how the actual AOD looks, because there are people that use it without "lifting the wrist" to wake up the screen.

  • An example would be good. Post a photo of what you think is a good one and a bad one.

    NO

So once again: The reason why the AOD watchfaces display so pixelated and little data is "battery saving".

Black pixels do not consume power. But luminous ones do.

    That is a technical fact.

The logical conclusion is that with an OLED display, "beautiful" watchfaces consume more power than less "beautiful" ones.

And now we are back at the point :

    NO

I'm sorry if it seems different.

The Epix is a SPORT WATCH, so if you buy it for its intended purpose, you know what you are buying it for.

Then why are you posting in the IQ forum?

  • I just want them to put some effort into how the actual AOD looks

  • I'm hoping these pictures will give an example of what I mean. This has completely blown up into something that is questioning the use of a Garmin watch and who the target audience is. I'm not oblivious to the purpose of a Garmin watch and the battery life / drain thereof when talking about an AMOLED screen. I'm merely suggesting that they put in the same effort with AOD when designing a watch face (for download on Connect IQ).

Here is a standard Epix Gen 2 watch face and the AOD look great, non pixelated and the general look and feel of the watch face remains the same

The same applies to the below. Non pixelated, general look and feel remains the same and good visibility.

Below downloaded from the Connect IQ store as a Garmin watch face. I don't expect all of the details, but comparing it to my first set of pictures it leaves something to be desired.

The same applies below, surely some effort can go into the AOD if it's possible on other watch faces Garmin makes.

I hope this makes my post more understandable. I am all for the long battery life and I'm not looking for a smart watch. I just feel that Garmin can put in some effort with the AOD, because in some of their watch faces it look amazing and in some like the few I posted it looks half assed.

That's all, I didn't want to debate the technical aspect or the target group, that's straight forward. I just feel they can put in some effort with the AOD which they have done in some watch faces.

Anyways have a blessed day and safe training (apologies for the word vomit between us) , I will try to post this on the link you sent. I was just wondering if it bothers some other Garmin users as well. You would think they are completely moving in an all AMOLED direction and it's these small things that matter to some users, or to me at least.

  • I don't care so much about the looks, but I am desperately trying to find a face that keeps my seconds hand up.

This whole battery life argument seems kinda flimsy to me. I have a descent mk3i, and my battery lasts for weeks. I'd happily charge it every 13 days, instead of every 15 days, if I could set it to be more useful in my everyday life
