Activecaptain keeps crashing on two Android devices

Hi

Just got a new Echomap chartplotter and while trying to set it up with ActiveCaptain the app just crashes out after about ten seconds on two different Android devices, both relatively new. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm used to hacking around and getting things to work but this is a pain. I managed to transfer the map I bought with Garmin Express and did the basic ActiveCaptain setup on the GPS before it started to crash. Rebooted phone, ran scan, optimised mememory, etc.

  • I think the issue is related to downloading maps. Uninstalled, reset wifi to GPS, reinstalled, no crashing. Downloaded purchased G3 map area, finished the download, crashed, very cranky app. Marvellous device though, pity the crappy software spoils it a bit.

  • Following steps reported to Garmin Support, jury's out to see if I get a response:-)

Hi, these are the steps I followed:
Have a refurbished Echomap Pllus 74cv
Installed ActiveCaptain and set the GPS up for it
Flashed the latest ROM for the GPS
Purchased the HXEU001R English channel map
Downloaded the map via Garmin Express to the SD card as I could not get ActiveCaptain to download it, possibly my own ignorance
Downloaded the sections of the map in ActiveCaptain to the phone
When completed ActiveCaptain crashes and goes back to the Android screen
It seems to remain active for a while in the background as the connection to the GPS remains on for a while and starts downloading the map before dying as well

Same issue on a Android tablet

  • Hi,

Did you ever get this resolved? I was told that ActiveCaptain is not compatible with Chromebook. I tried to install on Chromebook and it seemed to connect to Echomap Wifi ok, but never transferred waypoints/tracks. That feature was not recognized. I went back to my phone and the same issue appeared (my content won't transfer from phone to Echomap). It was working fine before I tried to connect Echomap to Chromebook. I wonder if our issues are related to having more than one device associated with our Echomaps? I'm trying to get a response from Support. They've been good on some questions, quiet on this one.

  • There was a problem with my account/map setup on the Garmin site which they fixed and then it worked. ActiveCaptain is a Windows executable for Windows so will not run on a Chromebook as it is a different operating system, if you can call it that. Have you tried re-initialising the GPS and ActiveCaptain from scratch, reset to factory defaults and do it all again? Any routes and other data should be saved on the ActiveCaptain website. Seems to be a very quirky system. Can't really call the wireless connection 'wireless' though as you can only connect to your phone and not other wireless devices on the boat, so pretty first generation 'wireless'. GPS is marvellous though, I do enjoy it and it works well on the water once all the quirks have been resolved.
