Garmin Express told me to disconnect the device without safe eject

I used Garmin Express 4.1.5.0 for Mac to update my Garmin Nuvi 58. Both the software and the map needed to be updated. The program updated the software first and then told me to disconnect the device. I disconnected it and got an OS (Yosemite 10.10.5) warning that the device wasn't safely ejected before disconnecting. I restarted the device and installed the map successfully. But then I checked the filesystem with Disk Utility and found some issues that needed to be fixed.

I believe Garmin Express should always eject the device before telling the user to disconnect it. Failing that, Garmin Express should tell the user to eject the device .

I'm actually surprised that Nuvi 58 exposes FAT filesystem to Mac OS. Most modern gadgets use MTP, which doesn't require a safe eject. Moreover, I believe my older Garmin Nuvi 2555 was using MTP (but I used it with Windows). The need for safe eject is not self-explanatory these days, please don't blame users!
  • Most nuvis these days are mtp devices. You have one of the few models that aren't. It's a mass storage device which like any mass storage device should be safely ejected. Glad though you resolved the issue.

The Mac OS X platform does not support the MTP communication protocol. If you connected your nuvi 2555 to your Mac, it would automatically connect in Mass-storage mode, not MTP. If you connected your nuvi 58 to your Windows PC, it would use MTP mode as well.

Actually, none of the map update applications that have been developed for the Mac by Garmin have ever ejected the device. When instructed to eject a device Garmin Express, it must be done manually and if an SD card is inserted into the device, both need to be ejected before disconnecting the cable.

If this capability is something you would like to see in the future, please let us know by using our Have An Idea? website.

    This is a problem...

...when my Mac goes to sleep! The disks appear to be ejected incorrectly, even though the device hasn't been disconnected.

The GPS64st loads the maps as it's disconnected from the computer.

Is there a fix, somewhere, please? I seem to recall reading there is one, I just can't find it!

    Thanks

I am happy to answer your question. If the Mac goes to sleep, it will disconnect USB devices. We need to prevent it from sleeping or turning off its hard disk. Please do the following before loading maps:
    1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left of your screen.
    2. Select the System Preferences.
    3. In System Preferences click on Energy Saver.
    4. For the slider that says "Computer Sleep", please slide the bar to the right to select "Never".
    5. Uncheck the box for “Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible”.

Now, please load the maps again. You can change these settings back when finished.
