Garmin Express does not see ANT stick on Mac OS X - workaround

I am having a problem where the ANT stick becomes no longer recognised. After a reboot it is fine, but when it is unplugged and put back in, Garmin Express can no longer see the stick.

I know the everything else in the chain works because I have successfully synch'ed using an OTG cable and the same ANT stick.

This procedure works for me:

Quit Garmin Express
Start Activity Monitor
Select "Garmin Express Service"
Force quit (press the x at the top LHS)
Start Garmin Express

Your watch will now synch.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.4
GE v4.1.5 (latest)
USB ANT StickTm Part Number: 010-01058-00
  • Same problem. Any solution?

I am having the same issue as of a few days ago. Previously I had no issue with my Mac recognizing the ANT+ stick. Now the green dot at top of Garmin connect alternates to gray (i.e. between "ANT stick connected" and "ANT stick not connected"). As a result, I cannot initiate a data transfer. I purchased a newer version of the ANT stick (much smaller in size), but it does not work either.

At first, I thought my old ANT stick had died a sudden death. But now, since the new stick does not work either, I have my doubts and wonder if it has something to do with my Mac (and it's UBS ports).

Any additional suggestions would be great. :(

If multiple ant sticks don't work and you have tried different ports on the computer I would recommend trying using either a powered USB hub, or a different computer to see if it is actually the ports on the computer.

  • Reinstall helps but not completely fixed.

I uninstalled Garmin Express following the instructions on support.garmin.com/.../case.faces.

I reinstalled it and now I have the following behaviour.

If I start GE (not previously running in background), then the stick is detected when plugged in.

If I remove the stick, is no longer detected, as expected.

If I plug the stick back in, it is still not detected. This is unexpected behaviour.

However, if I quit GE (not running in the background), the stick is detected when I plug it in.

This is an improvement on the situation before reinstalling, but it is still not the behaviour I experienced before GE 4.1.5.
  • I have exactly the same experience. The Ant+-stick is recognized by Garmin Express. However, if I unplug it and plug it in again, it's not recognized unless I restart Garmin Express first. I'm using the latest version of Garmin Express and the latest version of OSX Yosemite.

It's an easy workaround, but a hassle nevertheless. Hopefully this behavior can be fixed in a future release of Garmin Express.
  • I am sorry for the troubles. I tested the reported issue on Mac 10.10.4 iMac, Garmin Express 4.1.5, and the ANT Stick USB-m stick.

    1. Restarted Mac w/ANT Stick connected
    2. Open Express application
    3. Disconnected ANT Stick
    4. Add new device which prompts the user to Connect the ANT Stick
    5. Connected the ANT Stick
    6. 30 seconds later Express recognized the ANT Stick

    7. Tested with a Forerunner 310XT added using the green dot next to "ANT Stick Connected".

I was not able to reproduce this issue. Express took about 30 seconds to recognize the ANT Stick each time.

Have you tried deleting the device from Express and adding it back again?

I recommend that you contact Garmin Product Support if you continue to have trouble with this issue.

  • Thanks for testing this. In your case there is no problem. I can confirm both my OSX and Garmin Express versions are exactly the same as yours. The only thing that differs is that I have an older version of the Garmin ANT+ stick. The version I use isn't the USB-m variant but an older, larger variant called 'Dynastream ANT2USB'. Do you happen to have of these available for testing? Could be a problem related to the specific version of the ANT+ dongle.

@PubBike: which version of the stick are you using? You can check this by inserting the stick, and starting up 'System Information' on your Mac. Under 'Hardware'->'USB' you can check the details of all usb devices currently connected to your Marc.

I just tested a 10.10.4 iMac using the Dynastream ANT2USB ANT Stick and could not duplicate the issue. In fact, it took less than 30 seconds for the ANT Stick to be detected, I'd say more like 10-15 seconds. I followed the exact steps that Curt noted in his post above.

At this point, it would be best to contact Product Support by phone for further assistance with this.

  • Curt - your test didn't test my problem

I am sorry for the troubles. I tested the reported issue on Mac 10.10.4 iMac, Garmin Express 4.1.5, and the ANT Stick USB-m stick.

    1. Restarted Mac w/ANT Stick connected
    2. Open Express application
    3. Disconnected ANT Stick
    4. Add new device which prompts the user to Connect the ANT Stick
    5. Connected the ANT Stick
    6. 30 seconds later Express recognized the ANT Stick
    7. Tested with a Forerunner 310XT added using the green dot next to "ANT Stick Connected".

    Curt,
Thanks for that but I suspect you couldn't reproduce my issue because you missed off some important steps in your testing. Assume that the device has already been added, as I do not expect to have to do this every time I use GE.

    Now try this:
    Start GE.
Put in ANT stick. (get green dot)
Remove ANT stick (get grey dot)
Re-insert ANT stick (still get grey dot for me - should get green dot)
  • PubBike

I used an iMac 10.10.5 (just upgraded yesterday, was 10.10.4) and the Dynastream ANT2USB Stick to run this test. Here is what I did:

    • Opened Garmin Express
    • Added Forerunner 310XT
    • Rebooted iMac
    • Removed ANT Stick
    • Started Garmin Express > gray dot
    • Inserted ANT Stick > green dot
    • Removed ANT Stick > gray dot
    • Inserted ANT Stick > green dot

I then disconnected and reconnected the ANT Stick about 6 more times and it was detected each subsequent connection. We are still unable to duplicate this issue.

  • Still doesn't work

I am still on OS X 10.10.4 but I've just been asked if I want to upgrade to 10.10.5.
    GE 4.1.5.0

    From system information
    ANT USB-m Stick:

    Product ID: 0x1009
Vendor ID: 0x0fcf (Dynastream Innovations Inc.)
    Version: 1.00
    Serial Number: 036 $A7 $A7 GRMN † ¦ „Fæ ¬
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Dynastream Innovations

I tried the same test and the green dot disappeared after the 2nd unplug and hasn't come back.

I'm back to having to kill the Garmin Express Service again.

Note that I haven't rebooted for a while. Lisa, why does your test include a reboot after adding the device? Is that necesary. I haven't rebooted for several weeks now.

I'm going to upgrade to 10.10.5 and perhaps this little glitch will disappear.
