Garmin Express not showing Amazon nuMaps North America only Lower 49 States

Sorry if this is a duplicate thread, I've tried to search through both the forum search and on Google, and can't find an answer for this.

I have a nuvi 750 that I've had for years now. I've gone through several iterations of map update software, and the unit originally came with only the stock 49 states maps. Around 2012 or so, I purchased the Amazon nuMaps Lifetime North America (USA, Canada, and I think some of Mexico if not all). I recently had the need to use the GPS again, so I went to update it and found that the only software that shows on the my.garmin.com is the Garmin Express application that's supposed to have all of my map software (each map license/code is listed there and next to it is the same link to Garmin Express).

Well, the Garmin Express app only shows the Lower 49 and not my nuMaps (even though the website shows it and has all the info about it). My original computer, that I had the old map update software on, died; but thankfully I still have the "Garmin Map Update" software that contains the installer that lets me choose the map I want to install (it accurately shows both the Lower 49 and the NA maps).

Before I figured out how to get the old app to work on my backup of my old files, I used Garmin Express to load the map update (lower 49) and it did allow me to switch maps, but none of the choices actually contained the entire continent of North America--I could only choose option like West, East, Canada and border states, etc.

After I used the Garmin Map Update software, it prompted me to install the Garmin Lifetime Map Updater. This software shows the new map version (2015.40). When I plug the GPS back into the computer with Garmin Express, it doesn't even recognize the nuMaps North America, and says there's an update to the Lower 49 (2015.40).

I really don't know what to do at this point. I suspect that if I allow it to install the Lower 49, it's going to overwrite the map version that I have, which includes Canada. I also don't know if there will be like a 2016.50 version next year to the North America map, and if the Garmin Express will be able to do the update (or am I just stuck with the Garmin Lifetime Map Updater?).

Does anyone else have this problem and was able to successfully fix it or know what's going on?
  • Lifetime Updater has been replaced with Express. CN NA 2015.40 is the latest map version although 2016.10 is expected first week of August.

You say Express is offering an update to your lower 49 2015.40 that is installed? If so that is likely to be the full NA map.

I can try wiping the SD card and re-installing the Lower 49 to check, but there seems to be a distinction between the nuMaps North America and the Lower 49. I originally had the Lower 49 installed, and it shows an infographic with what is included in the map. Lower 49 shows only the 48 contiguous states plus Alaska, and the other options are different locations. When I wiped the SD card and used the old software, the infographic showed all of North America.

Basically, Garmin Express doesn't see the current map software on there and wants to update my nuMaps 2015.40 with Lower 49 2015.40 as if it's a new version. The old software says the maps are up to date though. So this leads me to believe that Garmin Express does not recognize more than one map software.

I can try starting over and verifying whether or not Lower 49 has Canada, but it takes a long time and I'll have to attempt it tomorrow.
  • If you've not used Express before I believe you may not get an option under 'Map options' to change the map already installed, so it may well install the lower 49 at first. You might then need to run it again to get the option to install the full NA map.

An alternative would be to create a cloned device and download the map to that, if you used a card for the clone it would then be a simple matter to place it into your nuvi to check you have the full NA map. Details on cloning are here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39231 and it's how I update my devices, as it has the added advantage of leaving you with a working device should there be an issue with the download.
  • Lifetime Map restrictions

Unfortunately for North America maps, the Lifetime Map subscription only allows you to update the map region(s) that were originally installed on your device when it was new (this restriction may not apply to CN Europe). Since your device came with the Lower 49 region, that is what you will be offered to update in your Lifetime Map subscription. The "Requirements' language" in the CN NA Lifetime map subscription product description says this:
This product only can be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your device. For example, a device preloaded with North America maps cannot be updated with nüMaps Lifetime Europe, and vice versa.

Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updated to the same geographic area included with your Garmin product when originally purchased.

This product only updates the maps that came preloaded on your device. Due to an increase in file size, this map update may not fit on your device. Remaining map data may be saved on a microSD/SD card if your device has a card slot available.
  • Good spot Alanb, I forgot the Us maps work differently to the EU ones, here if you purchase a lifetime update you get the full EU map regardless of what was originally on the device.

The Nuvi 750 came preloaded with all of North America which was at the time US & Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, but not Mexico. When you purchased the LMU in 2010 it would have given you access to Mexico maps. Currently you should have access to Full Coverage of North America. I do not recommend you use the Garmin Map Updater. If you have not completed one install of 2015.40 maps with Garmin Express do so then use the FAQ article below to change the map region. Garmin Express should recognize the SD card and install Full Coverage to it. It is difficult to determine your exact circumstances through the post so if you continue to have troubles please contact Garmin Product Support by phone.

How do I reinstall maps or change coverage using Garmin Express?
