Garmin Nuvi 2595 not found by Garmin Express

I have updated my software and maps several times over 12 months but today downloaded and installed a newer Garmin Express which, when run, will not recognize/find my Nuvi 2595 connected by (Garmin) cable to my year old MacBook Pro running 10.10.3 Yosemite. The Nuvi 2595 visually acknowledges that the cable is connected to the Mac, which is providing it power, but the software cannot find the device. The Nuvi just loops: turning itself on showing the Nuvi and Mac connected by wire, giving the 'caution page' about driving and operating the device, then off again.

Should I be killing this latest Garmin Express install and revert to yesterday's backup, or what? Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for this SUSSAMB. I have tried all avenues advised in the reference you quite, to no avail. Even after now upgrading yesterday to the OS X recent upgrade to 10.10.4, no joy. I'll have to call Garmin in the coming days to see if they care to assist. Thanks just the same SUSSAMB. I'll report here if I get success.

    Solution

I phoned Garmin Support (from Canada: 1-866-429-9296) and I was asked to attach my Garmin Nuvi 2595 to my computer with my data cable. I informed her that the screen graphic displayed a *gold* coloured desktop computer attached to my GPS. She then had me unplug the Nuvi and asked me to go to the Nuvi Volume page and press the invisible button at the top, right side of the page for 5 seconds.

The Diagnostic Page appeared and I was directed to scroll down to, and press, 'MTP Settings'. I had to un-click "MTP Auto Detect" by clicking the "Mass Storage" item.

Again I attached the Nuvi to the computer and found the graphic displayed a *white* coloured desktop computer attached to my GPS. Everything, like Garmin Express and WebUpdater, etc. now recognize the Nuvi. Life is good again.

I have not looked that hard here or elsewhere, but I have not seen any mention of this hidden Diagnostic Page, and have no idea what 'MTP' is, but I hope this information helps others.
  • Glad it's sorted. mtp is media transfer protocol and was introduced by Garmin on the later nuvis to try to prevent problems being caused by users inadvertently formatting, deleting, corrupting data etc on mass storage devices. There's some detail here if you're interested:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol

Occasionally some computers seem to have problems using mtp and nuvis need to be switched to mass storage mode.
