Garmin Express not compatible with Edge 800 (Mac)

Downloaded the latest version of Garmin Express v4.0.18.0 on my Mac today. Unfortunately this version of Garmin Express is unable to recognize my Garmin Edge 800. When attempting to synchronize my Garmin Edge 800, the device is found by Garmin Express, but I get the error message: "Edge 800, Serial Number: XXXXX - This device is not compatible with Express."

Anyone struggling with the same problem?

Dear Garmin, what are you up to this time?!

I am getting tired of you guys releasing software that has not been thorougly tested - I expect you to fix this bug FAST!

    Disaster!

    I possess 3 Garmin devices.

The problems began with a map update error on a BMW NAVIGATOR V.

I removed the device from Garmin Express and attempted to re-register the device without success. Following this I dis-installed GARMIN EXPRESS. I now have all 3 devices presenting the "This device is not compatible with Express" ERROR!

What an absolute disaster releasing floored software. All 3 devices have been working fine up until Garmin decided to release 3 or 4 updates over a short period recently.

I have written 2 emails to GARMIN. Unfortunately they have a cut&paste response system which is rubbish. I supplied an array of information that was entirely ignored and a generic solution was provided (not addressing the problem)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated be it from the Garmin users or Garmin staff!
    Thanks

  • I am sorry that you are having trouble with Express. We are seeing this issue when trying to add devices using computers that are set to certain region formats. We are working to correct this issue but in the meantime, you may be able to add your device to Express by following these instructions:
    • Click the Apple icon
    • Click System Preferences
    • Click Language & Region
    • Change the Region to United States under Americas (Other regions will work as well but I know this one will work)
    • Add the device to Garmin Express
    • Change the region setting back

  • Also make sure you are on the current version of Garmin Express for Mac. The current version is 4.0.24, not 4.0.18. The current version can be downloaded from here:

  • That did it - but I am not happy!

Garmin Express v4.0.18 was the last version available via the Garmin Express' built-in update feature. Don't ask me why.

I managed to download v4.0.24 yesterday via a link I received from Garmin Support - that didn't do any good.

By doing the "region-trick" mentioned above I finally managed to make my Mac recognize my Edge 800 and upload my data.
Garmin, could you please tell me how it is possible to release new software with such a bug? This confirms my theory that you do not test your software before releasing it to the public. Don't you have any beta-testers, in-house testers or athletes/representatives that tests your software before it is finally released?

The "time-to-market" isn't that short - start testing!!!!!!!

...or make your users aware that they are using software that has not been thoroughly tested - with the danger of data loss etc.
  • Same issue with an Edge 510 I've just bought. And solved it changing with the change of the region, it works.

    Many thanks.
  • The issue with Garmin Express displaying the message "The device is not compatible with Express. Please contact Customer Care for help." has been resolved. If you continue to have troubles please contact Garmin Product Support by phone so the issue can be more thoroughly investigated.

    Dear Jason

GARMIN EXPRESS (Maybe consider renaming it!!)

Following your work around I managed to associate my EDGE 810 to my account (again).

GARMIN EXPRESS didn't recognise the FORERUNNER 220 was connected!

The BMW NAVIGATOR V was seen to be CONNECTED but was impossible to associate with my GARMIN account when requested to "ADD DEVICE" The serial number was shown but it was impossible to associate the device to my account displaying only a "DEVICE CONNECTED" at the top of the GARMIN EXPRESS app. I noticed in the BMW folder the GARMIN dig & GPX files were dated January 1, 1970 at 1:00AM. I suspect this date creates a conflict. I tried saving off the GARMIN folder and HARD RESETTING the device but the date issue repeated. Is there someone who can evaluate the product LOG to evaluate why I can no longer associate my NAVIGATOR V. It was fine until I recently updated the EXPRESS software. Why release floored software? I have wasted hours trying to resolve this issue and your email service is dreadful. I wouldn't mind if at least the staff read the request/issue. Is there someone I can contact? Can you contact me?

Waiting patiently for some support (for what is an excellent product.....)

P.S. Garmin wouldn't allow my computer to upload the screenshots of the problem!

I suggest you contact Garmin Product Support by phone and have them investigate the remaining issue with the Forerunner 220 and the BMW Navigator. By your description it sounds like you may have some device issues. Both these devices show up in Finder as Volumes. Garmin Express only looks at one file on each device to identify it. The GarminDevice.xml file inside the Garmin folder. If this file is not valid Garmin Express will not detect or properly process the device. Both devices create the GarminDevice.xml file when they startup. If the device is not recognized, delete the file, empty the Trash on the Mac (Important), then eject, disconnect, and power it up. This will create a new hopefully, valid version of the file. Try Garmin Express again.

    Tried that

    Hi Curt
I had already tried deleting the .xml file. Unfortunately it doesn't change the situation. It still won't add the device to my account. It was working perfectly until I updated the EXPRESS software.....The device acknowledge its connected but ADDing is not permitted......
  • Hmmmm - resolved? Don't think so!

How can you say that the issue has been resolved?

Is there a new version of Garmin Express available for download, where this issue has been fixed, that I am unaware of?
All you have managed to do so far is present a workaround - that is not resolving the issue!

Yet again - please fix, and thorougly test, your software before releasing it!
You can not afford to have your regular users as "beta-testers" in the long term...
