There was an error installing the update.

Each time I try to install map updates, after a few minutes I get the message "There was an error installing the update."

Device: Garmin Nuvi 765
Software: Garmin Express 4.0.8.0
OS: Mac OS X Yosemite
Hard Disk Space Available: 44GB

Device shows as connected and I have attempted reboots, clearing trash and closing open applications.
No other information is provided so i am stomped. I suspect it is stopping during the download process.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks. I'll give it a try.
  • Thanks all.
In the meantime I tried the old PC version on my tablet. Map downloaded but wouldn't build despite trying everything other threads suggested. So then I updated to the latest version. For a while the map wouldn't download as it couldn't connect to Garmin servers. In a magical moment it managed to connect and is downloading as I write this. I am praying it will complete, build and install the update. Fingers crossed.
This is all ridiculously frustrating just to get simple map update and seems to be buggy across operating systems.
If PC version will not work, will try out an old version for Mac as a last resort.
    Will keep you posted.

  • I have a Nuvi 3590; I'm running OS X 10.10.2 and Garmin Express 4.0.8.0 and it is, without doubt, the biggest pile of poo I have encountered in 30 years of programming and software development. I've managed to update the system software on the device using Express, but updating my maps is impossible. I have a 30mbs download speed, but Express first of all tells me the map update will not actually take four hours, as originally estimated, but over 4,000. Then the fans on my 2014 Retina 15in MacBook Pro go flat out, Garmin Express Service hogs nearly 200% of my CPU, and finally I get a message saying there's been an error (unspecified) and it stops the so-called update. This is a joke in extremely bad taste ... how Garmin can keep a straight face with this level of quality is beyond belief.?

More or less agreed in full other than the fact I have the BMW Navigator V. I too was worried / perplexed when the fans started to run full pelt on my MacBook Pro... 16GB RAM and it was basically all in use. Like you the GPS software has updated w/o problem but the latest Map Updates... been trying for 2 days now. Gets around ⅔ of the way there with slow download speeds (yet my broadband is good) then just stops downloading.
The GPS was not cheap and I would certainly expect better service, otherwise why get Lifetime mapping.
  • All,

I am unable to reproduce Express taking up all of the system resources. Can you guys post screenshots of your activity monitor showing this happening please? Also post your system specs? Please use the latest version of Express when taking the screen shots.

  • Hi Albert,

Sorry, having "wasted" many hours using the latest Garmin Express on both my MacBook Pro and my iMac, I followed some earlier advice on this thread, uninstalled the latest version and downloaded 3.2.29.0... I now have the latest Map updates on my BMW Navigator and on my iMac so I am currently working with Base Camp and the latest mapping. I am now a happy bunny, but will be reticent to update Garmin Express for the moment.
  • The PC version only downloaded half way on my tablet after 24 hours and I suspect its just stuck so I gave up on that. Back to attempting the Mac Version.
I tried with Garmin Express 3.2.8 suggested by vespamarc
The map downloaded but I am getting the same error as that on the PC old version:
"Express cannot build the map. Please clear the contents of the temporary folder and retry the update. If the problem persists, contact Product Support"
This is crazy. What temporary folder? Any ideas how to tackle this latest bug?

Yes it is a bug because per my original post I have 44GB free and Garmin Website is stating it only needs 13GB
  • Then follow the line at the end of the FAQ that says if you have sufficient space contact product support.

Thanks. Have done so. Will let you all know if they manage to resolve it for me.
