Won't sync or update vivosmart or edge 1000

Garmin Express for Mac won't sync or update my edge 1000 or vivosmart.
luckily the edge updates wirelessly but the vivosmart is still a problem. i'm using the latest version of Garmin Express 4.0.8.0 as it updates itself every time i open it. i connect my vivosmart to my macbook via usb, open garmin express, click vivosmart, click install click continue and garmin express just says it is searching for device. i've varied the procedure by clicking cancel, disconnecting the vivosmart from its cradle connector, click connect and then reattach the vivosmart to the craddle, in all cases the vivosmart starts charging but garmin express does not progress from searching for device.
Interestingly, at the start of this when disconnecting my vivosmart it proceeded to update to 3.10 from 3.0, and her vivosmart updated from 2.8 to 3.0, and whilst mine states its at 3.10 garmin express insists its at 3.0 and needs an update whilst hers refuses to update to 3.10.
Garmin Express Mac looks to be broken. I appreciate there will likely be daily updates for the app but is there anything i can do to try and resolve this?

    I don't know if it's related but my vivofit syncs everything except the activities.
  • I have a similar problem, I am using a PC, but haven't been able to sync any vivofit activities since Monday, the steps total and sleep are OK

    It sounds like the vivosmart is already added to Express but it is not detected by the application. Have you tried removing it from Express and adding it back? Does the Mac detect it? Try the troubleshooting in our FAQ Why is my Garmin device not communicating with Garmin Mac applications?.
