There was a problem transferring the update...

Hi,

I've just tried to update my Nuvi 3598 to the latest maps using Express. The download went fine and although there were a few hiccups at first with the software hanging on 'building', a few restarts and I managed to get it to install the map update to my device. Or so I thought. It seems to get as far as about 97% before stopping with the useful error, "There was a problem transferring the update. Please try again."

I can disconnect the device and see that it has successfully installed the 'EUROPE DEM" and "CN Europe NTU 2015.30 ALL" maps, but I appear to now be missing the "CN Europe NTU 2015.30 3D" element.

Is this something that i need? I assume it's the 3D buildings and the like, which is one of the reasons for going for the 3598 in the first place!

I am thinking I may try and delete the cache and re-download the map, but I am sure on how to delete the map cache on the system, wipe the device and start again.

Anyone able to help?

Thanks in advance.

I am sorry that you are having trouble updating the maps. The error that you are describing indicates that there is a problem getting the file from the computer onto the device so I don't think that downloading the map again will resolve the issue. If there was a problem with the downloaded map, the checksum should fail and it would download again automatically. Please try the following:

    • Update Garmin Express to the latest version (3.2.30)
    • Try running a repair disk on the device

I did that and there was no problem with the unit. Not should there have been as it was literally bought that day!

I think I figured it out though. The 3D buildings file is 799Mb. My device only had 680Mb free, even after me stripping out all the unused languages, voices, vehicles etc. Short of knowing which of the SID files related to countries that I will never visit, there didn't seem any way of freeing up any more space.

In the end, I've had to put a microSD card in and move the JCV file to that, in order to free up enough space for the 3D buildings file. I would have expected Garmin Express to be able to tell that the map update wasn't going to fit and be able to spread it across the internal and external storage itself, but alas no - it took me a fair bit of googling.

To be honest, it's a bit of a poor show if the top of the range unit can't take its first map update straight out of the box without you having to buy more storage! Even more so that once you've bought the storage, it's not exactly straightforward sorting it out. Can't imagine many people spending the number of hours I did last night trying to solve this.

Maybe that's how the lifetime maps work in Garmin's favour - they'll offer you them, but unless you are a ninja, you can't use them!

I am glad you got this working. This was the first thing that came to mind when I read your last post but after seeing what device you have, I would have thought there would be enough space so I didn't mention this as a possible cause. Make sure that you have emptied the trash with your device plugged in to your Mac. If you delete files but don't empty the trash, the Mac just hides them and they will still take up space.

    Hi,
I am having the exact same problem with update 2015.40

(Settings, Map & Vehicle, myMaps, and no 3D maps anywhere!! It only shows Europe DEM & CN Europe NTU 2015.40 ALL)

If space is the issue on my Garmin and I already have a 8GB external card in my device how do I split the update?
So that some files install onto the Garmin and others to the memory card??

You would think paying over £250 for a SatNAV it would be smart enough to realise space is running out and automatically move
The appropriate files to the external card :(

But if doing this manually is the only way forward I would be grateful if you could walk me through the steps

    Thanks
    Scott
  • Express should automatically install the map to the card if there isn't enough space on the device. What exactly is happening when you try to update and what device do you have?

    Model nuvi 3598

    1) Checked myMaps
    Europe DEM
    CN Europe 2015.40 ALL

    2) Start Garmin Express and connect device

    3) Check for updates

    4) Your maps are up to date
    Full coverage of Europe 2015.40
    Reinstall Map

    5) Reinstall Maps

    6) Downloaded

    7) Installing

    8) All updates were successfully completed

    9) Disconnect device, Reboot, check myMaps
    Europe DEM
