how to force Garmin Express to re-sync or where do I put files??

Hi all. My wife's got a Garmin 910xt. Last fall Garmin Connect stopped working with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) so she no longer was able to automatically upload her activities to GC. But at least with the Ant Agent the data kept being transferred to the computer so any of the *FIT files could be manually imported.

Now I have Yosemite installed on an external HD for now (until I decide if I like it enough to move on from SL). I installed Garmin Express and put the Ant stick in the computer. The watch kept saying transferring data and I could see files being moved to this folder:

/Users/jasonp/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/RegisteredDevices/3855590805/PendingSyncUploads/Activities

Though these files did not have the *FIT name:

Also saw files appear in [EDIT: actually in retrospect I think these files were transferred by the Ant Agent on SL back on Jan 2]

Maybe this was the ANT stick doing the file transfers automatically? 3 different 910's showed up on Garmin Express, but I could not sync to any of them, it always returned an error. Tried to add a new device but that failed as well (pairing was enabled on the watch).

So quit Express, copied the Devices & Express folders to another spot then deleted them from the Garmin folder. Re-ran Express, no change. So deleted all the existing devices in Express using the Devices tab, then quit. Again removed the Devices/Express folders, re-started Express and this time I was able to pair to the 910. I linked my wife's GC account in the Device tab and then hit the Sync button. Nothing. Didn't error out but didn't seem to do anything either, no messages showed up. Nothing also showed up in her GC account though a new 910 did show up there that it wanted to update (which is weird since Express says it has latest version which it does).

So long story short, how do I get Express to re-load all the data from the watch? If I can't do that, can I take all the existing files I've saved off and copy them into the current Device and/or Express folders in some way that Express will think it's new data and upload to GC? Very frustrating so far, ugh! As a last resort I know I can upload the *FIT files one at a time to her GC account, but what a chore that will be!

Thanks for any help!

You can use the Mode-->History-->Transfer All menu on the 910XT to resend the activities. Garmin Express should only upload missing activities.

There is another option to manualy upload files to Connect Modern but it is currently down. There is an Import link in the upper right on the Activities page. I suggest you try that next week sometime if you have a lot of activity files that are missing from Connect.

  • Thanks Curt, will try the transfer all function on the watch.

I know about the Import link on Connect and have used it before, but as far as i know it can only upload one file at a time, correct?

Correct, only one file at a time can uploaded manually.

  • The transfer all function did the trick, all 300+ activities on the watch were transferred over to GC via Express!! However the process took over 3 hours to complete because every 5-15 minutes the 910xt would just turn itself off while transferring data. Didn't seem to matter if the charging cable was plugged in or not, or how close I moved the watch to the ANT stick. Fortunately I would just turn the watch back on and it would resume the transfer (and Express would just wait for the data). Searching the forums I found a few threads describing this issue, but no long term solution except possibly the issue was being caused by a corrupted file on the watch. Obviously the more activities to transfer the higher likelihood of encountering the shutoff.

Any long term fix for this issue?
