Downloading activities to 920xt (as well as adding device to Express) doesn't work

Hi there,

I have tried for multiple days (starting on thursday) to download an activity from Garmin Connect to my watch via USB and Bluetooth (with Wifi, the watch can't even connect to the router despite being directly next to it).

When I tried it the last time yesterday, I removed the device from Garmin Express in order to set it up from scratch. Unfortunately, now I can't add the watch back to Garmin Express. Even though, it says that a device was found, it times out loading the device information and finally comes back with the following error message: "We are sorry, There is a problem with our servers which means that Express is temporarily unavailable. We are working as fast as we can to get it back up and running. Please try again later."

Basically, that means that I can't use my device at all at the moment.

Anyway, when I checked my local garmin logs (regarding the download of the activity), I found the following log entries:

2015-01-16 19.15.23 (GMT+08:00) | 5135 | I | Device [3895978118] update with reason: 13

I also checked the logs regarding adding the device to Express and found the following entries:

This error (-1001) appears to be a network error. Since you are having trouble syncing your watch over WiFi as well, I would recommend resetting your router and/or modem to see if this resolves the problem. If this does not solve the problem, I would recommend following the steps here:
How do I correct the Unable to connect with Garmin Services error message in Garmin Express?

I managed to resolve the second issue (i.e. registering the device to Express), there was an "auto discovery proxy" setting in my network settings.

Downloading activities (i.e. the first issue above) seems to be working on and off. With some activities, it works flawlessly, others fail consistently. So I don't think, it has anything to do with my router or network settings.

    any idea ?

Try to upload the failing activities manually to Garmin Connect. Detailed instructions to do so are in this FAQ:
How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect?

Once the activities have been uploaded, delete them off of the Forerunner 920XT. If the activities still fail to upload, then they are corrupted and still need to be deleted off the device.

    Hi lisa,

I guess, there is a misunderstanding. I am not trying to upload to Connect, but rather download existing activities FROM Connect (see log entries above).

  • Try saving the Activity as a Course then going to the Course menu and sending it to the Device. It looks like your trying to send an Activity to a device directly from the Activities Details page.

will try that when I am back at home, but as I said, some activities do sync when sending them via the activities details page. Besides, I thought, when saving an activity as a course, one would lose the time track and waypoint information from the earlier run which is what I am mainly interested. My key objective is to compare my race against an earlier run, rather than use the watch for navigation (as one would do with a course).

Ok, tried both....saving as course and then sending it versus sending it directly as an activity.....both scenarios worked now fine which suggests that there were some server issues before.

all good now, apart from the fact that I can't get more than 18hrs out of my watch which makes 20+ hr runs (the main reason for buying it in the first place) impossible. will do some more tests and then probably contact customer service.

and here we go again....not possible to download courses from connect to device. Same error messages as above network failures....I haven't changed anything in my setup, local firewall and any web proxies are switched off. Besides, connecting to Garmin via the browser is not a problem, so why should connecting to http://connectapi.garmin.com be a client side problem then ?

getting really annoying....really the opposite of reliability and stability. I know that the same error was mentioned before (error code -1100), and the recommendation was to move to classic mode. this was quite some time ago, so I would have assumed that it would work by now with the modern view, but apparently not...

and of course, if switching to classic mode and trying to push it from there doesn't work as it requires Communicator which isn't installed anymore due to not being able to run alongside Express.

    it's becoming a nightmare...any ideas ?

  • I am sorry for the troubles. There is a known issue with Connect involving Courses created from Activities as of last week. Currently Courses created from Activities will not sync with fitness devices. The Connect team has been informed of the problem and are working on a resolution. For those interested in using the navigational features of a fitness device, courses manually created can be sent to the device from Connect.

Again I am sorry for the troubles.
