Garmin Express sync issue with Garmin 301XT

Garmin Express 3.2.28.0 / Mac Mini OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 / Garmin 310XT firmware 4.5

Having multiple issues GE on my mac mini. For a long while (10 months +) I have ignored these issue by not downloading my data from my watch via GE to Garmin Connect because of sync issues

- Watch says "Transferring Data" says its uploaded data successfully to Garmin Connect. BUT data is nowhere to be found on the GC site.
To add insult to injury the data is now gone from watch
- The watch says "Transferring Data" and then it displays this error message - "We're Sorry... There's a problem with our servers, which means that Express is temporarily unavailable. We're working as fast as we can to get it back up and running. Please try again later."
- Occasionally GE tools will function without a hitch.

I have tried the following (together and separately) - the general flakiness of the application/tool
(1) Uninstall and Reinstall Garmin Express
(2) Master Reset of my 310xt

Any suggestions, options and commentary would be appreciated.

I love my watch and I am OK with what the Garmin Connect site offers, but I can't say I have the same positive feelings for the tool (ie. Garmin Express on Mac) to make the 2 work together.
  • If you go into your Library folder (the one Apple keeps hidden from you in your home directory, not the System one), in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express are a bunch of folders, one if which might contain your data if you didn't blow it away when you reinstalled (depending on how you did it, that may have happened). I've read here (I don't have one) that for the devices that sync via ANT+ Express keeps a copy of the data that's sent, I'm guessing in the RegisteredDevices folders. So it may still be there, and all you'll have to do in that case is manually upload it to GC.

Thanks SCHNIDER I will search out this folder and hopefully find my "lost" activities. It would be a shame to loose them but I won't loose sleep over it.

Hoping that Garmin support will at least officially acknowledge a problem with the tool and rectify soon. I hate to see all of the negative comments about poor customer service by Garmin on various forums of the site.

GE sync with 310XT from Mac

I have the same problem with my 310XT trying to sync from a Macbook running OS X Yosemite. Been trying since Jan 1st to upload anything. No reply from customer support either. I have deleted and reinstalled Garmin Express and it fails after asking me for the account to upload to.

"We're Sorry... There's a problem with our servers, which means that Express is temporarily unavailable. We're working as fast as we can to get it back up and running. Please try again later."

See screenshot - with latest version of GE running!

One suggestion I found using Google was a problem with the timezone setting on the 310XT and the Mac which could prevent GE from syncing. When I checked the Mac is on UK (GMT) and the 310XT on Automatic (and shows the correct UK time). Scrolling through the different time settings there is no UK (GMT) option, which seems odd. I'm holding off doing a device rest in the hope I can keep all my non-synced activities.

We are currently working to correct this issue on the Mac. If you would like to upload, and have a Windows computer, you can do it from there. If you are unable to do this and don't mind losing the data you can reset the watch and you should be able to sync after the reset. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your reply. I don't have access to a PC that I can install software on, and I really don't want to do a rest and lose my last 2-weeks activities.

Any ideas when this will be fixed?

Unfortunately, we haven't received any estimated date that this will be resolved.

    Dear Jason

I have a workaround that may be useful for other Mac users if they previously had Garmin Connect working AND have backup of the computer. Copy the entire "Garmin" folder from the "Application Support" folder on the backup drive to the "~/Library/Application Support" folder on your Mac startup drive. Make sure you choose "Replace" rather than the other options.

The user Library folder is normally hidden, but can be reached using the "Go To Folder" command in the Go menu on the menu bar - type is "~/Library" without the quote marks.

Express should now run and sync your files correctly. It does not result in the loss of any stored actives or overwrite anything either. I've tested this on Mac OS X 10.10.1 (Yosemite).

I don't know if this helps you work out what the problem is. To me it looks as if the Garmin Express client can use an old set of connection data but cannot correctly create a new one.

    Best, F.

I am glad you got it to sync. I would still recommend resetting the device before doing any more activities otherwise the problem will most likely come back. The problem here is that the GarminDevice.XML that is being retrieved from the device is corrupt so it will most likely only work once before starting to fail again. Garmin Express may initially use the XML that is already present from the last time that it synced but it should get replaced on each sync.
