Forerunner 310xt stalls when updating the new Garmin Express 4.5 version

Hi there,

I'm trying to update the new software version 4.5 into my Forerunner 310xt but the downloading starts and then stalls and then shows an error saying "couldn't communicate with the device". When I try to add it as a new device it shows the device but when the page ask me to add it to an account I already have it appears that the servers are down and Garmin is working on it.

I tried everything and nothing. I also downloaded the last version of Garmin Express for Mac.

Can somebody tell me how to fix this issue? I appreciate it.

Depending on the version of firmware that is currently on your 310XT there could be an issue with the GarminDevice.xml file. What was happening previously some times the device when communicating with Express would create a bad file which would have the firmware in the GarminDevice.xml file reading as (0). This has been corrected in newer firmwares which is what you are trying to do now. Now I am unsure if this is indeed whats happening to your device. One thing that has corrected device communication with Express and fixing bad file creation with the device is a Master Reset. If possible I would recommend trying to install Express on a different computer whether it's a Mac or Windows PC. If you are able to add the device to Express and update the firmware on the other machine great if not the Master Reset might be the next option. See the FAQ: How do I master reset my Forerunner 310XT?

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for your help but I tried on my wife's computer and experienced the same issue at the end it says the servers are not responding. I'm frustrasted I have more than a week trying to sync my workouts and nothing.
    Any other suggestion Mike?
    Thanks again.
  • If you have corrupt files on your device, a master or hard reset (see above) is most likely your only option. You will lose all your activities on your device.

    Master Reset worked

I did a Master Reset and is communicating perfectly.

    Thanks Mike.
  • Nice! ;) That usually works, but need to warn folks that they will lose all their activities and courses. I typically sync my watch after every activity. Worst case would be I would lose just 1 activity if I needed to do a master reset.
