Garmin Express no longer finds my Edge 810

I just found out that there was a major software update was available for my Garmin Edge 810 ( and for the 510 and 1000) so I tried to install it on but for some reason Garmin Express does not recognize my unit any more.

The Garmin Express windows shows the following message Device connection required. Please connect your device to the computer" although the device is connected to the computer and the connection was working as it charged the battery from ~80% to 100%.

I re-downloaded to latest version of Garmin Express (3.2.27.0) but this did not change anything. I also tried to "Add A New Device" to add the unit but I does not find it.

I also have to manually stop the Garmin Express software as it keep trying to find/connect to my Edge 810.

This is very frustrating. Thanks in advance for your help.

PS: I wanted to upload a screen shot of the Garmin Express windows but the CTRL+SHIFT+4 KEY creates a PNG Image file which the upload feature of the forum does not allow my to upload.
  • Does the Edge show up in your USB tree (Apple menu -> About This Mac -> System Report -> USB)? Is there a GARMIN disk mounted?
  • No, I don't see anything about GARMIN
  • So here are the possibilities. The USB on your Edge has failed, or the storage chip inside has failed. The cable is bad (charging doesn't mean that it isn't). The USB on your Mac has failed. All the hardware is working properly but Express is screwed up.

The first you can check by plugging your Edge into another computer if you can. If it shows up there, then that's not the problem. You can check the second by finding another cable to use if you have one. Macs usually have more than one USB port, so try the other(s). I asked about what shows in the System Information app because that's an easy way to see if your Mac has at least detected the Edge.

I have the same problem with my Garmin Nuvi 1300 (with lifetime map updates). It suddenly stopped being recognized - with two different cables - by Garmin Express (latest version) on my iMac with OS X 10.10.2 and my MacBook with OS X 10.7.5 - although it charges and also shows the icon of a Garmin connected to a computer tower as soon as it is connected. It also does not show up in the USB tree in System Information.

Basically the same is happening when I connect the Garmin to a Windows PC, although here Windows tries to install a driver at first but then stops and gives a message that the "device has malfunctioned".

Besides this the Garmin as such works fine.

Does this mean that I can forget about updating the device ever again which means it will be turning into a brick once the maps are truly outdated, or is there any trick to get this fixed again?

I am sorry for the troubles. The "device has malfunctioned" message usually means the USB port on the device has gone failed. My suggestions would be to try another USB Data cable, avoid any USB cable designated as a charging cable. Those will charge the device by will not transfer data and thats what your after. Always use a USB port on the back or side of the computer avoiding external USB hubs, keyboard USB ports etc.. You can try a Master Reset on the Nuvi but that would be a last resort. If that fails to correct the problem the device would need to be replaced.

How do I perform a master reset on my nuvi 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400 and 1690 series device?

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

Thanks for your reply.I tried now a third cable and also a reset. Still no sign of the device in Garmin Express. In other words, the USB port in the device is gone. Looking at the many postings here where people have the same problem I'm getting the impression that the USB port is not exactly a strong point in the Garmin devices (I'd say that my device was over the complete life of it less than 10 times connected to my computer for updates before that did not work anymore).
  • I have a solution that worked for my Edge 810 and Mac USB ports.

I sprayed FinishLine chain degreaser (an acetone /alcohol solution) onto all the contacts. The Garmin female input, the male end of the wire, and the USB male end of the wire. Hallelujah ! Garmin Express software synchecd and updated the 810.

  • Yes, mine showed under the USB on system report but it doesn't show on finder. How to retrieve it? Please help.

  • I have this issue for a few years and I managed to solved by using a garmin cable.... normal cable doesnt download the data.
