Nuvi 2597 Has refused to update since new.

My 2597 worked very well for about a week.

In an attempt to update, Garmin express noticed the device was existing, but could not connect. Will not connect still.

I have tried multiple USB cables, on multiple USB ports.

Device actually connects 1/100 attempts... Starts firmware update process, and when device is unplugged, device will not reconnect again to complete firmware update process. and will allow no further progress.

No other forms of communication attempt can connect to device either, web updater, or web page with Garmin Communicator.

My last nuvi lasted 5 years and is still working... this one is tragic and sad. it barely works and takes an eternity to calculate routes, not to mention claims memory errors if you try to switch your car.

Please advise before i lose patience.
  • I think first I'd try deleting GarminDevice.xml from the Garmin folder on your nuvi then reboot it which will recreate the xml file. It's that file that identifies your device and if it's corrupted it would explain why it's not being recognised.

If that doesn't work then try a master reset.

I would love to do either of those things, however if the device does not connect, how can I delete files?

Secondly, could you point me in the direction of the master reset button/location? There is no recessed switch like my past nuvi's.

...however if the device does not connect...

Perhaps you could clarify by "does not connect". Is is recognized by your Mac regardless of Garmin software?

Garmin software "recognizes" devices by the presence of a \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml file. It is possible for that file to be missing or corrupted but the computer still "sees" the unit.

Why is my Garmin device not communicating with Garmin Mac applications?

I have read every article I could find prior to posting this thread.

Master reset performed per instructions on another thread, no change in status.

"Sees" defined - Express registers the device in list, and acknowledges what updates need to be performed. Update is in "Gray" mode, (Yes, I checked the UL agreement box). Mac does not load device like a hard drive.

When plugged in, occasionally nuvi screen displays the "connected" Icon (Computer graphic with nuvi attached) but OS still not seeing device.

Garmin Express caches data. If it saw your 2597 in the past it'll show it in the list. That, in itself, doesn't mean anything. As you said it won't "connect" to it.

If the OS isn't seeing it I can only suggest trying to put the 2597 into mass storage mode, using a different USB cable/port etc.
  • Ah OK, that wasn't clear earlier ... so it's not being seen at all? Have you tried the link pointed to by StuartMW.

If still no joy call Garmin, they should be able to help but it may be your device needs replacing.

Mass storage mode is still no go. Assuming there is severe issue with USB port on back of device at this point.

Have you tried a different computer? If so, and it is doing the same thing. Please contact us by phone so we can get the device exchanged.
