GARMIN, some feedback on Express for Mac.

Not everyone has Internet access, not everyone wants to put their personal data on some server they don’t own, just to see exercise data. Users should be able to see and track their own personal data on their own personal computer without connecting to your server(s). Additionally, when your there is a connectivity problem, as there was today, I can't look at my data, because I can't sync. If I could view my data locally, we wouldn't be having this problem.

Garmin Express frequently goes to some sort of installation mode when I open it, as if I hadn’t already installed the program, or there is some update. When I cancel the installation, and re-open the program, it usually works as expected.

When I close Garmin Express I get a message “Keep Garmin Express running in the background?” No, I don’t want to. I’ve closed the program and I’ve had enough of that question.
  • Yes, you do want to. That way the background process handles uploads automatically, and you don't have start Garmin Express at all. And stop canceling the installation and update to the latest version (3.2.21.0), and then it will stop trying to update. But obviously you do have Internet access, or you wouldn't have Garmin Express and wouldn't be posting here, so I can give you some links.

You can look at your data locally using Garmin Training Center http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4685 which still works under Yosemite. But there are other apps that will do as good or a better job: I use and can recommend RubiTrack: http://rubitrack.com, which is still being actively maintained, unlike Training Center.
  • The way the software update is handled is just sloppy for a company as large as Garmin. When I go to launch Express and suddenly it mounts a disc image, I know what's happening and why, but every time I never expect it. The old version should launch and inform you that there's an update available - it shouldn't just automatically go to the software installer.

No, I don't. I want my data stored locally, so that I can view it locally the way I did with Garmin Training Center.
No, I don't want a process running in the background so it automatically uploads my data. I would prefer to set it to automatic, or manual uploads. Some of us prefer it that way.
Also, thanks for the info on the latest software. I hadn't checked for a while. Im hoping this takes care of some of my complaints.

Yes me too, i would like to see a stand alone application. I do not feel comfortable with the cloud trend. Lately everything is uploaded to the cloud.
