Duplicate activities when using an Edge 810 & Virb

Hi

I have an issue that is driving me insane and for the life of me I can't seem to find a way around it. Please bear with me whilst I try to explain my issue.

I use an Edge 810 to track my cycling activities and this uploads my gpx and other data to Garmin Connect automatically via Garmin Express. No problems.

However I have recently introduced a Garmin Virb Elite into the equation when I cycle. I only use the Virb to record my rides in the event that I have an accident and can use the video as evidence and I generally delete the video files when the memory card is getting full (on a weekly basis)

I do however charge the Virb via the usb cable connected to my MacBook daily. When I do this it automatically syncs via Garmin Express and I end up with a duplicate activity in Garmin Connect as I will have already uploaded my activity from my Edge 810 via the Garmin Connect iOS app.

I would like to keep the Virb registered in Garmin Express so that I can retain the ability to update the firmware when new releases are available. I have since deleted the Virb>Garmin Connect Account association from within Garmin Express but somehow the association is still present as activities are still being uploaded. Are there any config files that I may need need to manually delete on the Virb?

So how can I keep the Virb registered in Garmin Express for updates but turn off auto syncing to Garmin Connect?

Regards
  • Yes, that's exactly what I do with mine. It's not associated with my Garmin Connect account, so nothing is ever sent to GC. Whenever there's an update for it, Express will offer it and then install it if I ask. If you ever do need a track from your VIRB on GC, you can always upload it manually. You may have to actually remove the VIRB from Express and then add it back to get it to work.

Yes, i've tried that. I've removed my Virb from Garmin Express completely and then re-added it without connecting it to my Garmin Connect account this time. It shouldn't be connected to my Garmin Connect account as the button saying "associate with Garmin Connect" is visible, but somewhow it still has the old association becuase my activities are being uploaded automatically.

That's why I was wondering if there was some sort of config file left on the Virb that I would also need to manually delete.

I am currently looking into what might be causing this to occur. It appears that Garmin Express leaves the login information in the keychain even after removing the device. If we delete the keychain entry for the Virb, Garmin Express should no longer be able to sync with Connect. To delete the Keychain entry:
    • Open Finder
    • Click Go in the menu bar
    • Click Utilities
    • Double-click Keychain Access
    • Make sure that login is selected in the Keychains pane
    • Double-click each of the com.garmin.cartography.mapupdate.express.auth entries until you find the one with the Virb's unit ID in the Account field (The unit ID for your Virb will begin with 387)
    • Delete the matching Keychain entry

    Jason,

Thanks. Deleting the keychain entry seems to have solved my issue.
