Garmin 305 ruins computer upon plug in to USB port after update to GCP 4.2.0

Hi -
Usually I don't like to use dramatic words like "ruins" and "destroys," but basically that is what happened to two of my laptops after plugging in my 305 GPS on 2 MacBook Airs after installing the latest Garmin Communicator Plug In.

Steps to Repeat:
1) Macbook Air with Mavericks. Both laptops had this OS.
2) Test Page said I needed new GCP & 305 was not being recognized by test page.
3) I downloaded and installed Garmin Communicator PlugIn 4.2.0 with browsers closed.
4) On First Mac, I unplugged and replugged GPS. The computer shut down. Power button would not restart. Nothing I could do would start it, including tips from web forums. It is now scheduled at the Apple Store. Thankfully, I have Apple Care, but they cannot look at it until next week.
5) Not realizing that the Garmin caused the laptop to die, I waited until I got home to my other Laptop. This one also needed GCP 4.2.0, and I felt I was on my way to success until I plugged in the Garmin and the screen went black! This was all to familiar! Now I have two bricked MacBooks!

I feel that I can safely say that the problem is related to the Garmin. I'm not sure if it is the software - but it is worth noting that I had plugged the USB wire into my macs with GCP 4.1.0, and this did not happen. Also, I had been using the Garmin for many months with no such issue. It's hard to understand how the GPS could cause such a serious, fatal situation, but I assure you: it is repeatable. I suppose it could also be the device itself, or the included base. Note that on the second attempt, I tried a different USB wire.

Let this message serve as a warning to others with the same equipment mentioned above - as well as information to Garmin that other people may get their computers bricked: and possibly will become extremely angry customers. Computers aren't cheap, and neither are repairs (computer #2 does not have Apple Care)
  • I'm sure the Garmin team will comment but I fail to see how this could possibly be caused by any software. It's possible I guess that a cable has been damaged and created a short (but since you changed cables not likely) or that your device itself is faulty. The other alternative I guess is an 'unsafe eject' ... I have no idea whether you have a 'safe eject' option on a mac like you do in Windows but while I've heard of an 'unsafe eject' in Windows causing issues with files on the device I've not heard of that causing a problem with the PC.
  • I'm with SUSSAMB on this one. It's too much of a coincidence that you have 2 bricked MacBooks and Garmin software is to blame. I'd be looking at the hardware you are trying to plug into the MacBooks.

I'd be very interested to see what Apple have to say.
  • Good points, SUSSAMB

Thanks for your reply. I agree with you: I find it hard to believe that this could be the software. Nevertheless, it did NOT occur when I had the previous version of software - and I had the previous version of the software on both computers. I just checked the release date (April 2014) of this software... I'd imagine that other users would have reported the same scenario by now - surely the 305 is sill a popular device and there are plenty of Mac Users out there. The crash occurs immediately upon plug in, so it's probably not related to eject. I'm sure it's not the wire given that I used 2 different wires.

So, as you suggested, it could be the device. It could also be the charging base, maybe a short like you mentioned. A search did not reveal others with this issue, so after thinking about it more, I'm starting to suspect the device/base. Unfortunately, I'm unwilling to do any more testing. :(
  • It's strange that this has happened to two Mac's using different USB cables. It is possible that there is some hardware/software conflict that is causing this issue. Could be a short as already mentioned as well. We haven't received any calls or emails regarding this so it's hard to say that it's a OS/Plugin issue. Because of this, it leads me to believe that there is an issue with the device itself. You may wish to contact our support line to discuss this with them:
