Garmin Express & Kenwood DNX7230DAB

Hello,

I've recently been having map issues with my Kenwood DNX7230DAB which feature navigation by Garmin. I've updated the devices firmware but the problem persists. As a last resort, I've purchased "City Navigator® Europe NT 2014 Map Update for Kenwood Download" from garmin.com/kenwood. I've paid for the file, downloaded and installed the Garmin Express software and connected an SD card with the device's information on it.

When I launch Garmin Express, it recognises the device, but when I click 'Add Device' nothing happens. I've tried re-launching, re-booting, and re-adding the device's details to the SD card but the problem persists. Is there a method of downloading the maps outside of the Garmin Express software? It just seems an overcomplicated and troublesome way of delivering software.
  • I have no knowledge of the Kenwood device, I assume it has a sd card slot so you are hoping to download the mapping to a sd card? Looking at the Kenwood site it seems you must first do this (have you?):

Correct. As it's not practical to remove the headunit from the car, you create an SD card which contains all the device's details. This is then recognised by Garmin's web client and it even auto launches Garmin Express when inserted to my laptop. It's just when I click 'Add Device' in Garmin Express, nothing happens.

All OS X software is up to date too.

    Try using http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg

    Thanks for your help, SUSSAMB.

It eventually started working, installed to the SD card and successfully installed on the Kenwood. Unfortunately, after driving around for a few minutes, navigation crashes followed by a 'No Maps Data' notice. If I restore the unit to factory settings, it works again for a while but the same thing happens again. I'm at a loss being honest.
  • Sounds like the unit itself may be faulty, sorry but as I said I have no knowledge of that unit so not sure I can help further, you may need to find a Kenwood dealer.
  • Garmin Express would treat the SD card like it was the Kenwood device. It would install the mapping to the SD Card. If your device is saying no map data it cannot find the map files. Either they are not on the SD card or the SD card is not in the Kenwood. I suggest you reinstall the map update to the SD card if needed.

    Hallo Paddy,

Don't know if you ever found a solution. I've got the same device - Kenwood DNX7230DAB.

I've had the exact same problem as you.

I contacted Suzuki (I've bougt a Suzuki with this device pre-installed).
They had no idea what so ever. Suzuki unmounted the device and sent it to the distributor in Denmark. The distributor repaired the internal SD-card, but they choose the original old 2013 map instead of the newest I bought. Now it works properly again, but with an elderly map :(

I contacted the distributor and spoke to the guy fixing my device - he told me that I could only buy new maps in their shop... And it would cost nearly 800 danish crowns (approx 135 us dollars).

I didn't had time more time to talk with the guy, so I hung up, but it left me with quite a lot of questions.

    1. Why is it possible for me/you/other dnx7230dab owners to manually buy maps from Garmin at the website, if its only works with a map bought from a distributor? (did he really lie to me?!)

    2. Why should I pay more buying from the distributor instead of Garmins website (which is already pretty expensive I think)?

    3. If both my SD-cards with a map bought from Garmins website caused my device to f*ck up, why should I go on an buy from the distributor?
The distributor just sends me a SD-card with the newest map. I have to insert in the same SD-card slot I already tried using and that didn't went well!
They don't want you to replace the internal SD-card with the one you buy from them, they want you to insert the SD-card in the SD-card slot 'external' of the device (you get my point).

Best of luck herefrom denmark to you with the device.
If you, by any chance, make it work, please let me know :)

I talked to our OEM team and they informed me that you do not have to purchase a card from the dealer. You can purchase an update, or an update card from the Garmin website and after performing the download, or installing the card(If you purchased a update card) the Kenwood should be able to view the map since you are purchasing a Kenwood specific formatted map. As I am not an OEM type person, I would recommend calling our support line and speaking with one of our Kenwood/OEM agents:

Just to update everyone on this, I did eventually get the Garmin Express software to work by 'recreating' the SD card with the HU.

My issue occurred before I purchased the updated maps, it just happens that the new maps have not fixed the issue. Navigation will work for maybe a maximum of ten minutes, before 'No Maps' is displayed and the Garmin side crashes. I can reset the Garmin software, and it will work again for a couple of minutes before dying again. It's very, very frustrating.

This sounds like more of a device issue than a map issue. Please contact our customer support line to talk to one of our OEM agents.
