Two map versions?

Earlier today I updated my nüvi 1490T (+ 4 GB SD card) via Garmin Express.

When previously updating I was advised about 'insufficient storage space', and had to manually remove the old maps form the SD card before the installation.
Today was different - I could download and install 'Europe NT 2015.20' (appr. 4 GB) without deleting anything.
After the installation I noticed that the new maps are placed on the SD card, whereas the nüvi still contains the previous map version (2014.xx).
The unit lists Europe NT 2015.20 under map info, and everything looks OK - but my question is: Should I manually remove the old maps to ensure that my navigation is supported by the newest map version??

Yes. Having two or maps, with routing data, overlapping can cause issues.
  • I'd just deselect one. Should the sd card pop out and you lose it you can revert to the older map, so at least you'd have some navigation ability :)

    - sounds reasonable; how can I deselect the older map version, and still keep it 'on standby'?
  • Tools, Settings, Map, Map info ... you'll see both maps, just ensure only one is checked.

    - well, I actually see only '2015.20' there(?) The older map is only visible when I open the Garmin folder contents on the computer.
  • If you take out the SD card and the Map Info screen is blank, then the only valid map image is on the SD card. Garmin Express should utilize the SD card for map updates automatically.

Then the other 'map' isn't what you think it is. Do as Curt suggests just to confirm the map on the card is 2015.20, although you could also check that by looking in the Garmin folder on the card. There should be 3 map files there, one ending in .img, one in .gma and one in .unl and they should have a recent date as you've just installed them.

Now, where do you 'see' these other 'map' files? What are they called? What size are they?

    - this is getting very interesting, I'll be back with more detailed info.

This is what the respective folders look like. Iaw. Curt's statement I suppose I should simply leave it as it is(?).
  • OK, that's now clearer. The ones on the card you need to keep.

What's not clear are the ones in the Map folder of your nuvi. The size of them, and their location, makes me think that at some time you installed a partial map using something like Basecamp, since Express wouldn't normally install maps into the Map folder. In any case they can be safely removed, and indeed you could remove all the files in that Map folder. Keep a copy on your mac until you're happy they aren't required.
