Garmin Express never fully updates my Nuvi 2597LMT

I'm using a Mac with OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks. I have been working for over 16 hours now trying to get my device updated fully. Nothing is working right. It decides that the update it downloaded on it's own is the wrong one, so then the device just sits there "updating" without actually doing anything.

I contacted Garmin support via the website email system and they did not provide much help, and are pawning off this case to phone support, which I find ridiculous.

So I mounted the gps and removed all unnecessary files such as non-English voice and maps files if it was easily recongizable as non-English. That seemed to help the situation, which allowed the device to update the firmware finally, and it is yet again downloading the updated map data, which is ridiculous since it has downloaded it multiple times over the course of these 16 hours. And now the maps download is only going at a rate of 5 KB/s and I am ready to throw this device across the room and give up on it.

Not only does it not know how to get to my house but would take me in a round-about way and never actually arrive but it doesn't learn!! Even after I told it where my home is, it is too stupid to figure it out with me programming it in.

The device not updating properly is just the icing on the cake, and I am appalled that Garmin or any company would put out a product this unfinished. It can't find many places I tell it to get directions to, or it tells me to "turn right off-road" which would end up making me kill myself and anyone in my car, and possibly others, if I followed that direction. There are many problems with Garmin and their maps and directions and I am ready to just sell this darn thing on Craig's List or ebay to get rid of it. Yes it's LMT but if it doesn't work it doesn't work.

I will have to check my hard drive space to see if these uncompleted map updates are hogging my hard drive space and with an SSD my space is limited as it is.

I have registered and reregistered the device multiple times due to deleting it from Garmin Express and if this doesn't fix the issue I don't know what will.

And I am unable to change my "username" here because Garmin wants our email addresses to be public to the world as our username, so, Thank's Garmin! Not!

I am seriously considering writing off Garmin as a viable option for providing GPS service. At least the LMT is free and there is no monthly charge to use the darn thing.
  • You've entered your e mail address at some point instead of a user name like most of us do. To change it see here, you'll need to pm TRI.JANDS https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?80198-Change-User-Name&p=279142#post279142

I've never had an issue updating Garmin maps, I have 3 devices now and have been updating Garmins for years. Why you're having a problem I don't know but the Express team may be able to help. They should be along soon.

I suspect the reason you were 'pawned off' to phone support is that they can then remotely access your system and resolve the issues, trying to do it via e mail or even on this forum isn't simple as there could be numerous problems with your system.

As for directions etc, again while occasionally there are mapping errors I use my nuvis, and have done, regularly in the UK and in mainland Europe, rarely do I find errors.

Yes, I entered my email address because it says to do so in the registration screen, though it does not allow you to enter a separate username. I will contact TRI.JANDS, thanks.

I'm glad you have never had problems updating your devices. This has not been the case with mine. And no for this I would not allow some company or person to remotely access my system. It's not worth the security risks to do that. I will install Garmin Express on a family member's PC (Windows) to see if it will work properly. If it does, then it's likely a problem with Mac OS X, which is my OS.

I am glad you do not tend to have problems with directions from your Garmin. Both Garmin devices I've had over the years have had major problems. And I would think that cities like Columbus, OH and Las Vegas, NV would not have many if ANY wrong directions yet this is the case and has been since my first device in 2009. And there seems to be no way to correct the directions if you do know how to get to the destination. If there is, it is not easily found.
