Everytime I restart my mac Garmin Express tries to reinstall

I have no idea why. Running OSX 10.9.4.

The installer package seems to automatically run every time the computer reboots. Have tried letting it go through the install, killing the install. Nothing seems to have any effect.

The app seems to work fine syncing a Edge 810 and and a Forerunner successfully.

This just happened to me today when I upgraded from 4.0.8 to 4.0.11. There is something corrupted in the Preferences or Caches that is causing this. A full uninstall and reinstall of Garmin Express corrected this. Here is our FAQ on how to do so:

How do I completely uninstall Garmin Express?

Version 4.0.11 can be downloaded from here.

If this does not resolve this, however, try deleting ALL the .dmg files and reboot the Mac. Otherwise, contact Product Support by phone for further assistance.

This has been happening on my Mac ever since Garmin Express was released.

No matter if I reinstall the app or not. In my opinion it's just poor coding from Garmin. The old web updater seemed fine, however Garmin Express has always been problematic for me. If the installer comes up, I just close it and try to resync from Garmin Connect, it then tries to reload Garmin Express and then behaves normally.

It's just annoying because I don't choose to have Garmin Express running until I sync to Garmin Connect. I'm not sure why anyone would want to waste resources running Express all of the time. Software companies and designers really have no idea what the consumer really wants. In this case, I just want to upload a tiny file to the website. I don't want another bloaty piece of software clogging up my computer.

You can change the Preferences setting so that Garmin Express is not running in the background simply by unchecking that option. Then you can launch Garmin Express from the Applications folder when you want to sync.

Whilst I thank you for your response, quoting from the Garmin Customer Support Employee's manual yet again fails to fix the simple issue of turning my Mac off, only to turn it back on and reinstall Garmin Express.

We currently have a case open for this. It appears that what usually causes this behavior is updating Express outside of the application after express already downloaded the newer version. Express is not currently checking if the downloaded update is newer than the version that is already installed. To resolve this issue, delete the com.garmin.renu.service.plist file from ~/Library/Preferences.

The uninstall directions for the Mac work and I don't get the installer on startup. The procedure is a bit tedious but thank-you for the directions that include all the items that need to be removed.

  • I apologize to those of you that were experiencing this issue. This has been resolved in the latest version of Garmin Express.
