Everytime I restart my mac Garmin Express tries to reinstall

I have no idea why. Running OSX 10.9.4.

The installer package seems to automatically run every time the computer reboots. Have tried letting it go through the install, killing the install. Nothing seems to have any effect.

The app seems to work fine syncing a Edge 810 and and a Forerunner successfully.

    Hello,

I am having similar problems on my Mac. Running 10.10.1. I get the install prompt every time the computer restarts.

In response to previous suggested posts, when I search in my Library, the only folder under Garmin is for Garmin ANT Agent. There is no folder for Garmin Express in there.

Additionally, I have some more information to add in a repeatable scenario. When I have Garmin Express open, I will quit out of the application. This still leaves the GE icon in the upper menu bar. When I click on the icon, and select either "Garmin Express" or "Preferences", it takes me straight to the installer EVERY TIME. When I cancel out of it, the menu bar icon disappears. I then open the application via my applications folder. Again, I have repeated this numerous times, with the exact same result every time. Quite annoying.

As of today, the latest version of Garmin Express is 3.2.25. You can always check to see what the latest version is by visiting this post: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?137552-Garmin-Express-Release-Notes.
Please make sure that you have this version installed. You can check the current version by following these instructions:
    Open Garmin Express
Click Garmin Express in the menu bar
    Click About Garmin Express
    Click Check for Application updates

If for some reason, this does not give you the most current version, it can be downloaded here:
    http://download.garmin.com/omt/express/B/GarminExpressInstaller.dmg.

If this does not solve the problem, then make sure that you have deleted the GarminExpressInstaller.dmg file in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/AppUpdates/. There is a Garmin folder in ~/Library/Application Support/ if you have Garmin Express installed. Make sure that you are in ~/Library (your user Library) and not /Library.

  • So is it confirmed that this is the software update process?

I too am an IT professional and software developer who has never seen an installer run at boot to update software. I've always assumed it was some bug so I cancelled out. Since I only restart about once a week, it wasn't too big a pain point. Atrocious software design, which sadly is par for Garmin. Does the person who green-lighted this update process actually use a computer regularly?

I used to put up with your lack of software quality when GPS technologies were in their infancy, but there's really no excuse anymore. Your software is the butt of many jokes on the group rides and runs I participate in.

    Hello everyone

Sorry for my English, i'm french ;)

I have the same problem on my iMac :
    - if garmin express is launched automatically at startup, i have at every startup the installer which is opened
    - if i deactivate automatic launch, no problem
    - then if i launch manually garmin express, problem is here again, installer is run again.

I tried to remove the dmg file in /Users/"myname"/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/AppUpdates/GarminExpressInstaller.dmg
    But problem is still there.

How can a small software like this have such problems, for such a long time ... ? (the first message here is quite old)

Is there other software to use instead of garmin express ?

In french, this software could be called a "usine à gaz" (gaz factory) : should be a very simple and easy to use software with no bug, but is not like this ^^

Hope this will work, one day ... if i dont find a software solution, i will go to concurrent side (polar or others ...)
  • All, I had the same problem but today it seems as if i have resolved it.

It appears to be Garmin Express trying to install a new version. I always closed the install file but tried to solve it once and for all today. This time I went to the Garmin Express menu and clicked "About". In that menu was a notification that my version was out of date. I ran the update and low and behold, Garmin Express no longer tries to install when I turn on my computer.

    I hope this helps...
  • It's pretty much what we've been saying throughout this thread. Generally speaking the issue is that Garmin have chosen to cause an update to be downloaded/installed at system reboot. It's somewhat unconventional and as is clear, has caused some concerns. However, once the install is allowed to proceed, all becomes well and the message goes away.

I agree. This is the only piece of software I have where it (not me) decides when is best to update. The time it often chooses is normally when I am trying to quickly sync a new workout before running out the door. It is basically the worst time for an update.

Please consider this a feature request for implementing software updates they way all other self-updating programs I have ever used do, and provide an 'A new version of Garmin Express is available. Update now? [Update] [Not now]' dialog.

There are many aspects of the Garmin Express software which I do not like, such as the text that says in lovely all-caps 'OK TO WALK AWAY' (seriously?!), but the way it auto-updates whenever it likes without asking is currently the only one which causes me genuine trouble and frustration. The actual syncing functionality (once it has updated itself) is much more reliable now than in previous versions.
  • That option exists in the PC version.
  • I also have the same problem, every time Epxress is launched it tries to install again. I don't like having Express running in the background so it is always turned off unless I use it.
Still, it is not the latest version.
I updated through the About menu to the latest.

Yep does it to me every time I Shutdown and then come back to the start up the Mac, bloody annoying.

Version 4.0.8.0 on OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2

Apart from that it works ok.
