Everytime I restart my mac Garmin Express tries to reinstall

I have no idea why. Running OSX 10.9.4.

The installer package seems to automatically run every time the computer reboots. Have tried letting it go through the install, killing the install. Nothing seems to have any effect.

The app seems to work fine syncing a Edge 810 and and a Forerunner successfully.

Garmin Express wants to reinstall on every startup

So I regrettably "upgraded" to Garmin Express on my iMac, and it's not worked well since.

For the first week, every single time I started up my mac, the GE installer came up on screen, despite the fact it was already installed. I found some Garmin install files and deleted them, which seemed to cure that issue.

But that gave way to the "Take the tour or Get started" dialogue coming up every time I start GE after the computer has been shut down. When I click on "get started" and move to the the "Device Connection Required" box, it claims it won't find any devices and leaves me with "Try Again" or "Close". However, if I just leave it for a few minutes, it does in fact retrieve everything from my device (Forerunner 405) and uploads it to my Garmin Connect, whilst never moving away from the "No Device Found: Try Again or Close" screen.

It would be great if GE just opened up and worked, rather than for some reason resetting itself every time the computer shuts down
  • The "Get started" message is quite different from having to complete the Express install through the GarminExpressInstaller.dmg mounted drive.

If Garmin Express opens with the "Get started" message, try Quitting Express from the black triangle icon in the Menu bar at the top. Open Express from the Applications folder and it should detect added devices.

If the GarminExpressInstaller.dmg file mounts in Finder and prompts you to complete the standard Mac Install Wizard then go to ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/AppUpdates/ folder and throw the GarminExpressInstaller.dmg in the Trash.

Empty the Trash then restart the Mac.

    Cannot find this folder path

I am being prompted to reinstall every time I restart my mac. I cannot find ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express path. I only find a path for Garmn ANT agent with the defaultdevicesettings.xml file.

    Please advise

Use these instructions to get to the Library folder. It is hidden on Mac OS 10.7 and up.

    1. Click the Finder icon on the Dock
    2. Click the Go menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen
    3. Click Go to Folder
    4. Type this exactly ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/AppUpdates/
    5. Click Go -- This will open a new window in the AppUpdates folder.
    6. Delete the GarminExpressInstaller.dmg and Empty the Trash on the Mac.

Garmin Express will not try to update when the Mac restarts.

  • The easiest way to get to the Library folder is to hold the keyboard key Option
The click Go in the Finder, when option key is pressed down you will see Library.

It would probably give a less confusing user experience if you notified the user that an update was available and only loaded the DMG when they clicked to install it. No other applications automatically load a DMG and ask the user to click "Install" without telling them what's going on. I didn't realize these were automatic updates, I just thought your software was broken.
  • It is a good point KLEINSCH. I do wonder if the problem being reported with GE apparently re-installing is due to the infrequent computer restarts and frequent updates of GE. I have yet to have a reply to the question I asked sometime back of someone having this problem:

"If you do successive restarts immediately after GE has updated/reinstalled, does GE reinstall again?"

I have exactly the same issues, it is not that tries to install each time i logo, as i tired off the auto launch at login and using the terminal and activity viewer it is not running in the background but each time I launch the application it does one of three things

    1. works without issues
    2. run the setup again
    3. wants me to reinstall again

if option 3 or 2 happens - I just close down the application and launch again and it will operation normally as expected.

These re-instals and setups are not result of new download, because I have used which the internet disabled and using little snitch to track what going in and out of mac

This is clearly a fault with application as it each time i open the Garmin Express I never know which one it will do; I have been through the complete uninstallation, even though it cannot be experienced or recreated by garmin support - it is a bug in the application.

I have the exact same problem on my iMac running OS X Yosemite (10.10.1).
  • I am not seeing the problem on either of the 2 iMacs running Yosemite 10.10.1 that we use to upload our 910 activity information. I would suggest the following:

Get hold of, install and run App Delete

Un-pair and disconnect your device and Garmin Connect account from GE

Remove GE and delete all associated files

    Reinstall GE

    Re-pair your device

    Re-connect to Garmin Connect
