Unable to upload to 3rd party services with Garmin Communicator

Hi,

I recently purchased a 310XT. I installed garmin express and auto sync to garmin connect works perfectly.

However, I'm not able to upload activities to 3rd party services such as Strava. The Garmin Communicator plugin is installed but is unable to detect the device. I'm using the latest Google Chrome and all the software, including the device firmware, is up-to-date.

Please advice on how to get this fixed. I have a large strava network and would like to still have my activities shown there.
  • Locate the place where Garmin Express is storing your fit files in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express (the Library folder in your home directory, not /Library, the System library folder. Don't see your Library folder? Apple doesn't really want you to, but if you choose "Go to Folder..." from the Finder's Go menu, you can type in ~/Library and get taken there.) Spotlight can find every .fit on your drives if you want to just do that. Once you find your fit files, you can manually upload them to Strava or anywhere else. Communicator Plugin is no longer under development, and the problem is that Express stores the files in a different place than ANT+ Agent, and the Plugin doesn't look in the new place.

Alternatively, you can Export from the individual activity pages on Garmin Connect and then upload that file, or use one of the auto-syncing web sites (syncmetrics, tapiriik) to do it automatically.

Thanks for the reply and advice!

Why did Garmin decide to discontinue the communicator? For me it sounds like a one click operation was changed for something lot more complicated and this is a task that happens after each ride.
  • You can track down the official post in the Communicator Plugin forum from back in February, but basically they said that the major browsers are dropping support for the old plugin framework they use. It's a little hard to believe that there isn't going to be some new way of doing plugins, but since they have Express to handle syncing to Garmin Connect, and Garmin Connect Modern doesn't use the plugin at all, I guess they just don't want to bother with a plugin any more. For me, syncing is now a no-click operation to Connect (plug my Edge 800 or my Fenix in and it automatically syncs to Connect), but I know it's different with the ANT+ syncing models.
