Nuvi 42 not 'seen' by Mac

Trying to load a route onto my Nuvi 42 using Base Camp. No indication that BC has seen the device. No icon, no external device shown. Have changed USB ports, USB cable to no avail. Charging is OK. Mac is OS 10.9.4 What now?
  • It wouldn't matter anyway as your 42 isn't able to receive routes from Basecamp, but try here as BC should at least see your 42

Thanks, but no help there. I have tried it on my Macbook and eventually got recognition. Updated, then device disconnected itself leaving me with dire warnings to eject properly. Re routes, yes, I now realise that, but it wouldn't accept way points, destinations etc, which it has always done up to now.

And now back to square one - not seen by either computer.

Note if it doesn't the advice is finally to contact Product Support.

This is not really an Express issue this is more a device specific issue. This being said since you posted here I will try and help you out. If you have tried multiple USB ports and different cables along with different computers you are sorta at the end of hardware trouble shooting that can be done. If different computers can not recognize the device something may be happening with the device itself.

What you may want to try is something we normally try to avoid as much as possible, try plugging the device into a hub. Normally Garmin devices need specific amount power from the USB ports. If you use a hub it changes power from the USB port and causes issues with communication to the GPS. In your case this might change the voltage sent to the device and your Mac may be able to have the device mount normally. If this does work and you can have the device mount/seen by your Mac I would recommend a disk verification check. see FAQ: How do I run a check disk or disk utility on my Garmin mass storage device?

If you still are having issues with the Mac seeing your device at this time you will need to call into support. There is a specific mode the device may be able to be put in and a support agent might be able to re-force the firmware into the device or what you can call flash the firmware. In some cases this will need to be done by a remote session where a support agent will take over your computer and try and force the operating system of the GPS to be reloaded. The problem is that this type of operation can only be run by using a executable file which will not work on a Mac. To have this done you will need to be using a Windows PC. Contact support at:
