Just purchased a brand new Nuvi 55LMT with Australia & New Zealand 2040.30 maps pre-installed.
Running Garmin Express 2.8.0 on Mac OS X 10.9.4 - GE updated device software to the latest version (2.80)
GE did find newer maps (Australia & New Zealand 2015.10) however during the download process it stalls several times showing the error message "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin servers. Please try again later." If you hit Retry it will continue the download and stop again... after a few times it eventually reaches 100% download but it still stops showing the same error message. It doesn't matter how often you hit Retry it will never install the new maps.
Trying to remove / find again Device, uninstall / reinstall GE, tried doing the same on another Mac, tried on Windows 7 & Windows 8.1 computers, tried with Wireless and Ethernet connections, with firewall / antivirus switched off, no luck :(
Is there another way to update maps without using GE? Not happy especially considering "Lifetime maps updates" is a key feature of the Nuvi 55LMT !!
