Brand new 3597 unable to update map: "device being updated is full"

Brand new 3597, installed firmware update as prompted, then started Garmin Express and it said map update available. After waiting an hour or so for download, install failed with message "The device being updated is full". Huh?? So...how am I supposed to install map updates? If I click on the Device menu item in Garmin Express, it shows "Internal storage 97% full, 191.0 MB Free". This is a bit frustrating.
