Sync Virb with Express

Hi
Everytime I sync my Virb Elite with Garmin Express I get an failure. Please try again.
Some fit files do upload to GC.
Last time I tried to sync I got the same failure. I then went to activity folder and erased all fit files an then sync with no problems.
Today I turned on the Virb for a ride. Did no videos, only a ride. And when I got home, I turned the Virb off.
Connected the Virb to my mac for sync and the same problem appeared.
Looked in to the folder again and saw 4 fit files. 3 small about 5 to 15 kb and 1 big around 500 kb. Erased them one by one and sync each time. Still same problem.
Only when the folder is empty for fit files. Sync is the okay.
But GC do get the ride

So does anyone have the same problem?

Garmin Express V. 3.2.6.0
Garmin Virb V. 3.70
MacBook Air OS X 10.9.3
  • Hi there,
Yes I actually have the same problem; Garmin Express says it can't sync. Don't yet know why, I hoped it would be solved by now.

  • Please use the instructions in the FAQ: What should I do when having issues downloading Downloadable Content? If you continue to have troubles delete the GarminDevice.xml file from inside the Garmin folder. Disconnect the device and power it on so the VIRB ELITE will recreate the file. Hopefully the sync issues with be resolved.

    The link does not work.
But did a Hard Reset on the Virb and erase the GarminDevice.xml for the device, but still the same problem :(
  • Did some hard and soft resetting again and at initial sync-effort after that a progress bar shortly shows, but then again fails to sync. Garmin Express sees the amount of files to sync.
  • I used the VIRBELITE over the weekend and created several .FIT files that Sync through Garmin Express. I did find that if one file had some undefined data in it, the sync would fail until that file was removed. In my case this file was only 1KB so it contained no real data. On a Windows computer go to the directory: C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Core Update Service\Sync\Unit ID of VIRB\Upload\FIT_TYPE_4 and either delete the files or move them to a different location then try the Sync again. Deleting the file from this location seemed to the correct the immediate Sync issue. Deleting the same file from the device is also logical.

I will continue to test this and see what else I can find out then report it to the Garmin Express and Garmin Connect Teams. Since the VIRB's are mass storage devices the .FIT files can be manually Imported to Garmin Connect Modern, bypassing Garmin Express for now. From the Activities page in Connect Modern, click on the Import link then Browse to the .FIT file(s) in the Activity folder on the VIRB. If an Activity will not upload then some of the GPS data in the .FIT file may be corrupt and need to be deleted. See the FAQ: How do I manually upload data from USB devices to Garmin Connect? for Garmin Classic View.

  • Hi, Tried t find the file on my mac, found a folder with that name ands trashed is. Not the solution yet :-(
  • OELDERIK

Try deleting the VIRB from Express and cleaning out the Activities folder on the VIRB then adding it back.

How do I delete a fitness device from Garmin Express? *The Removal options are missing from 3.2.6 on the Mac. The device will be removed from the Connect Account. This may help the issue since deleting the device will remove the device and any pending downloads in the Sync menu.

How do I delete Activitiy(FIT) files from my mass storage fitness device?

Since we know the Sync feature works in Garmin Express we have to find the file(s) that are throwing the error and delete them. Hopefully the two procedures will correct the problem..

  • Deleted the Virb from Express and also the folder for Virb.
Erased all the *.FIT files in the Activity folder from the Virb and also the *.GPX files from GPX folder.
    Removed the USB.
Started up Express. Plug in the USB and added the Virb to Express and fail again.
I've attached the only file that is created when the USB was plugged in. This is not 1 kb, but 375 bytes.
    Hope this was useful.

PS. If I delete the file that are created, before starting up Express, then the sync is successfully done.
So this file might be the cause to the problem.

Okay. The folder for FIT files are empty.
If I turn on the Virb before connecting it to my Mac and afterwards plug to the USB, the it sync successfully. It creates a FIT file that are larger that 375 bytes.
If turned off and plug it to the USB, then it fails. A new FIT files is created. 375 bytes.
If I erase the 375 bytes FIT files, then the sync is okay.

So for now, I have to turn on the Virb before I plug it in to the USB to do a successfully sync. :)

  • I did fully deleted Express from my Mac, and cleaned up the Virb related files in Garmin folder in Application Support, and clean install again; no success yet. The deletion of all aforementioned files didn't help as well...
