Extremely unhappy about the Garmin Express update, too old iMac for 10.7

Isn't there anything you could do about keeping even simple support for OS X 10.6? My mid 2006 iMac doesn't support 10.7 so this has turned my Garming product useless. Not really happy about the idea of buying new computer just to get your product working, since the computer does everything I need it for just fine (expect uploading Garming activities now...). Couldn't there at least be a possibility to manually upload activity files through web browser if I first just get the file from the device myself...?

Really annoying that you make the system limited this way since there are a lot of old macs around.
  • Same problem for us. It's a choice between spending $1000 on a new Mac, or spending $200 on new running watches from a competitor.

You can still use manual uploads. That's still available. And there really aren't a lot of old Macs around (typing this on a Mac Pro running Mavericks) compared to newer Macs that Express runs on. If Apple won't support you, why should Garmin?

And, of course, you're sure the competitor's software runs on your old Mac?

Same problem here Update does not support my operating system. Guess I'm assed out. Thanks Garmin!!
    Any device recommendations..
  • You guys do realize that it's Apple you should be mad at, not Garmin? Apple has terminated support for 10.6 (for example), so their software development suite, Xcode, may not support it any more. (I just looked in my copy of Xcode 5.1.1 and only see mention of 10.8 and 10.9.)
  • SCHINDER - are you suggesting it's Apple's fault that Garmin is no longer supporting a perfectly functional service that worked fine for us users yesterday, but they have made unavailable today? (in my case at least, I understand this is a phased roll out of express replacing connect)

We are not asking for them to back port new express functionality to older platforms - that would be unreasonable - but I would say it's unreasonable for Garmin to remove the connect functionality that they already supported, from customers who are unable to upgrade to their new functionality.

The purpose of this thread is to let us tell Garmin that there are Mac OS X 10.6 users who have a problem which they can fix.

I don't really see how the version of Xcode you have is relevant?

    Thanks
  • The web site has been changed, true. So stop using it if you want; there are many others that do more or less the same thing, and some still might work with old Macs. Manual upload still works to Garmin Connect, so you can be like Linux users and use that. I used manual upload all the time anyway until Express came along; it was always the fastest way to get activities onto Garmin Connect. The old Garmin Connect is going away. If you can't use it, find alternatives, either to getting things onto Connect or to Connect itself. Don't toss your old copies of BaseCamp or Training Center, for example.

Look, I've been in the situation of using an old OS (heck, I still have an OS 9 iBook around here somewhere that still functions). You can't expect that everything is going to work for you the way it works for a Mavericks machine.
  • I have an old Macbook that I got off eBay for $300.00 I was able to upgrade it to Mavericks and everything works great with Garmin. Technically, my Mac shouldn't have been able to upgrade to Mavericks but it did. Maybe your's would too and if not, I would look at a cheap alternative and keep Garmin.

Ah, hang on - so there is a workaround?
I'm not on my mac now so I can't test this, but should I expect to be able to just plug in my watch, access it as a USB device, and manually upload the .fit file?
If so I'm very happy to stand corrected and say this isn't really a problem?
