Garmin Express just spins - may think my Edge 500 is Nuvi 2360?

Using iMac running 10.9.2 - When I connect the Garmin, Garmin Express doesn't launch automatically (as the settings say it should). When I open Garmin Express, it just spins and spins (for hours). I can choose "Preferences" and I'm able to get to a screen where I can use "Updates | Device." I can backup the device here successfully. It is odd, but while it shows "Model: Edge 500" - the image next to it is not the Edge 500 image. And if I scroll down to help and menu section and click on Owner's Manual or FAQs - it opens information for the Nuvi 2360.

After reading other posts, I've tried to remove the device from Garmin Express. Then I deleted the GarminDevice.xml file and emptied my trash. I then restarted both device and computer. I plugged them back in together and tried again to add the device to Garmin Express... same outcome.

The good news for now is that I can still go to the old garmin connect website and "upload" without issue. I hope you keep the old site for a while. I am trying to get my Edge 500 to work with your garmin express and new website - but I have to say, it's been frustrating.

Looking forward to your help!

  • There was an update to Express for Mac to version 3.2.5. Please make sure Express is up to date.

How do I update Garmin Express?

I'm actually running Express 3.2.5.0. Sorry I didn't include that. Any other ideas?
  • I have exactly the same problem on my iMac running OSX 10.7.5. Garmin Express does not automatically open when I plug my Edge 500 in and it does not recognize it automatically. I can only upload new activities by going to the older version of dashboard. Also, it keeps telling me that I need to update Garmin Communicator, which I do but all that happens is that it repeatedly tells me to install it and then restart Firefox. When I do that and Firefox reopens the whole cycle begins again.

I have sent in questions to Garmin, tried talking to their tech support but nothing. There is clearly something wrong with the way Garmin software is connecting to Mac computers right now and I can't find any place where Garmin will acknowledge this. Very frustrating as I am concerned that when the older version of dashboard is no longer available I will no longer be able to upload any activities. Please say something about this Garmin folks.

What is the Unit ID # from the Settings-->About Edge screen on the Edge?

In the meantime try deleting the all the saved devices from Garmin Express then adding the Nuvi and Edge again.

Try the suggestions in this FAQ: What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?

    Hi Curt,

My edge 500 unit ID: 4294967295

To clarify, I don't own a Nuvi. I only own the Edge 500, so I don't know why it thinks that the Edge 500 is a Nuvi and links to Nuvi FAQ info? As mentioned in the first post. I've removed the device multiple times and every time I add it back, it has the same outcome. It shows the name correctly, but displays a picture of the Nuvi and links to the Nuvi information. I'll remove it again.

Also to clarify, the older garmin connect website does correc tly display the right device and works great - so I've continued to use it.

If it helps my computer is: iMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo (so it's probably 5-6 years old).

The UnitID you are getting is incorrect for that device. The ID this device is displaying is an ID default number when there's an internal hardware error. Since this is the case unfortunately the device will need to be master reset. see the FAQ : How do I master reset my Edge 500?

If the master reset doesn't fix this issue the device will need to be serviced. To see if the reset did correct the issue when the device loads back up re check Unit ID # from the Settings-->About Edge screen on the Edge?

    Issue remains

    Hi Mike,

Sorry for how long it took me to respond. I did do a master reset. I checked the device and it still shows the same Unit ID#. I tried to reconnect it to Garmin Express, and as expected, it still thinks it is a Nuvi 2360 (when it certainly is an Edge 500). You mentioned if the master reset didn't work that I'd need to have it serviced? I'm still a little puzzled that it works correctly with your old website, but your new website suddenly doesn't allow it to work? Anyway, please let me know the next steps?

    Thanks,
    -Buck

Take a look at the device when plugged up to the computer. Make sure there is space on the device. In the device in the Garmin folder there is a file called "GarminDevice.xml". This file updates every time the unit is powered on. The file is not very large but if the space on the device is maxed out it can't update it's self. Free up some space by clearing out previously old activities that may be on the device. Then restart the device and see if this corrects your issue. If there is still no change you may want to try a Master Reset again. If the device UnitID is still showing up as 4294967295 then the unit will still need to be serviced.

I'll try to call support this week

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for responding. Since I just reset the device, there are only 3 activities on the device. So I can't imagine that's an issue. I'll try removing all past activities prior to doing another master reset (although setting up my pages over and over again stinks). I'll cross my fingers and maybe this time will be different, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Then, if all is the same, I'll call support to see about getting it "serviced."

Of course, since everything continues to work perfectly on the old Garmin Connect website... I'm going to take it biking this weekend first!!
