910XT occasionally shuts off during data transfer

I started using a new 910XT about 2 weeks ago. I'm on a Mac and using Garmin Express to sync data into Garmin Connect. I've noticed on a few occasions that my 910XT shuts off (e.g. physically powers down on its own) during data transfers. I haven't noticed a pattern, it's not really repeatable, and it doesn't happen every time. It happened again this morning as I was uploading today's run, so I thought I'd post to the forum to see if anyone has noticed this. Thanks!
  • Same thing is happening to me. Seems to be getting worse. I would actually like a feature to "auto off" after transfer, but during is a pain. When are we going to get some updates Garmin?
  • That's happened to me as well. maybe about 1 in every 10 syncs, turn it back on and it syncs OK. I'm on a Mac with Garmin Express and everything on latest software versions

I thought this WAS (seriously ) a feature that could be set ie after data sync? seem to vaguely remember a menu option somewhere.

this happens to me approximately 50% of the time, and is rather frustrating. Rarely, it seems to be accompanied by data loss which is very frustrating. This seems to be a chronic issue based on the thread - can't there be a solution?
  • Same problem here. I will never again buy a device, which cannot be synced via cable. ANT+ has been a pain one way or the other since I bougt the watch about 4 years ago (or whenever it came out).
  • Every time i transfer to my pc, the watch shuts down half a dozen times before finishing. So something that ought to be automatically ends up taking 15min of my precious time. At times i feel like getting a newer watch but i refuse to buy another Garmin out of principle and advice everybody i know to do the same. This has been ongoing for years yet Garming might never ever release an upgrade to remedy this situation. I don't believe their employees are not experiencing this themselves or that they are unaware about it. So it must be a management decision to leave it broken since newer models are out. Years from now cellphones and smartwatches will end up making strides into the sports market and the egoistic Garmin will never know how they lost their market share.
  • The transfer from the watch to the device is quite sensitive to distance. 2-3 m seems OK, but extending the distance from the ANT stick will give problems with failed transmission of data packets (so called RX_FAIL, if the receiving host, i.e garmin express received 16 RX FAIL the channel will go to search again and the socalled session timer on the watch will timeout and close the transmission). In the case of the 910XT it can take up to 1 minute to restart a failed transmission due to the battery saving optimization (it only advertises LINK beacons/ready to connect in about 2 seconds/minute). Also any obstacle that can diminish the signals from the watch will give RX_FAIL messages, i.e putting both hands for testing over the watch will give RX_FAIL messages.

I wrote a low-level utility getfit that can download fit files. Its based on nodejs/iojs platform https://nodejs.org/ and available at https://www.npmjs.com/package/getfit. It is primarily intended for command-line usage on Linux, but should work on Windows (tested on Win 10 preview in a virtual machine) and even OS X may work.
  • I get this problem somewhere between and half and a third of the times it transfers and it seems to be getting worse. It is a real pain and, as others have said, about time Garmin pulled their fingers out and fixed it. I will certainly consider other options, to Garmin, when time comes to replace this one if they haven't resolved this.
  • New to the forums and checking because I'm having (increasingly frequent) similar problem. Watch powers off shortly after starting to show a data transfer, and usually takes at least 2 or 3 attempts. Seems worse since I recently installed the updated version of Garmin express.

in the past week none of my activities show up on the watch (despite transferring to the windows xp computer). Four activities completed, but the watch only shows last Saturday ...

Same problem here. Garmin went on an extended sync cycle last week, but eventually worked. Happened again today and the watch shut off. I had to turn the watch off and on several times to get something other than the boot-up screen. When I got the watch operating and syncing normally, all of the recent data (2 weeks) was gone from the memory including the unsynced activity from today. Did a hardware reset. Will see what happens tomorrow I guess. I don't see any Garmin reps commenting on this thread.
  • As others have mentioned, best to post to the Garmin Express sub forum for visibility and better chance of a response from a Garmin employee.
