Edge 500 upload, connection and Express issues

I have an Edge 500. It is currently running 3.3. (which surprises me - see below). I sync via a Mac running 10.7.5

For two years it worked perfectly. Sometime last year I got message saying that I needed to update my firmware. I tried to do so using Webupdater but Webupdater couldn't see my Edge device. I got a screen saying 'No Device Selected' and when I tried to scan for a device, I got a message "No devices were found." Webupdater still does so.

Around the same time, Garmin Training Center started telling me it couldn't see the device either. It does show up on the computer and I have been able to copy and paste activities from the device into GTC and then 'send' it to Garmin Connect.

With the advent of Garmin Express I tried again. Garmin Express sees the Edge 500 and recognises the serial number but then I get different things happening. On some occasions it tries to connect but then says can't connect servers may be busy; or I get an error message see below. On other occasions I don't even get that far; it tells me to ignore the device and that it can't connect to Garmin services. If I click ignore I just go back to the start up screen.

Garmin Support has proved absolutely useless - they don't even reply to my requests for help. I have tried archiving all the activities and starting again. I have tried deleting the GarminDevice.xml file. I am reluctant to try a hard reset. Any thoughts?
  • If the Mac still detects the device as a mass storage volume (puts a GARMIN icon on the Desktop/in Finder), it sounds like the GarminDevice.xml is corrupt. A corrupt XML can still be regenerated by the Edge if you simply delete the file. If you have all of your activities backed up, I would recommend deleting the GarminDevice.xml, emptying the Trash on your Mac, ejecting the device, and performing the master reset found here.
If you continue to have issues, we may have to look at the GarminDevice.xml to find out what's going on.

I've done everything else except a master reset. I guess I'll give that a go.
