Auto Delete after Sync'ing

Former Member
Former Member
Hi there.

Anybody know how to reset the Forerunner 301XT and Garmin Express Application so that the application does NOT automatically delete data on the watch once it syncs to the app/website?

In advance of your reply, I thank you.

Thank you,

David

The erase after successful sync option was removed from Garmin Express. The Activities have to be manually deleted from the History menu on the fitness device. Please see the FAQ: How can I resend my history from my wireless watch to my computer? if you want to resend an activity through Express.

Sadly the workout is no longer in my history, I have found the .fit file but it's only 72 bytes, have tried manually uploading but it appears the activity is gone forever! Brilliant!
  • I want to turn off the Automatically Delete after Sync feature. With an older version of Garmin Express I was able to find this feature. But I think with the newer version of Garmin Express this feature is not longer available. The problem is I'm still stuck on Auto Delete after sync mode. Since I've lost the last two rides, I want to remove this feature so at least I have an option to trouble shoot the syncing when it doesn't work. Please help! Thanks, Aaron
  • I have the exact same problem. It's very annoying. Lost a couple of rides and i cant seem to find where to disable the auto delete-function. Even tried to use a recovery-tool on my fenix 2 but it didnt manage to recreate the files.
Does anyone know if there is a way to find my missing rides?
and of course, please help me to turn off the auto-delete.

If you are on the latest version of Express there's no delete after sync function within Express. Please see Curts #11 posting. If you are on the latest version of Express and the activities are getting deleted it's not Express doing this it may be something on the device. Now if you are not up to date with Express which is currently on version 4.0.20 see FAQ: How do I update Garmin Express?

  • Hi Mike!
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't solve my problem. I'm on the latest version on express (4.0.20), so as you say it must be something with my device, a fenix 2, but i've searched like crazy for where to de-activate the auto-delete setting. Can't find it. All my rides keeps getting deleted after i've connected to express, which would be fine if the activity actually showed in garmin connect. But it don't. Help? =)

I am sorry that you are still having trouble with this. Can you try these steps just to make sure that this is a problem with Express?
    • Quit Express on your Mac from the black triangle in the menu bar
    • Create a short mock activity on your device
    • Connect your device to your Mac
    • Check in the Activities folder on the device to see if an activity is there
    • Sync with Express to see if the activity disappears

If there was no activity to begin with, there is some kind of issue with the device and I would contact product support by phone so that a member of our Outdoor team can troubleshoot (you can also try posting in the device forum to see if you can get some suggestions if you can't call in).

If there was an activity and it disappears, try deleting the Express preferences files from your Mac:
    • Open Finder
    • Hold down the Option key and click Library
    • Open the Preferences folder
    • Delete any files that begin with com.garmin.renu

After deleting this file, try another mock activity and sync again. Please report back if this resolves the problem.

  • Hi Jason,
i've tried everything you said but it still doesnt work. Some new information though.. When I created a mock activity i thought i'd take a look at it in the watches history before synching. Turns out the history is empty, eventhough i just saved a workout. For some reason the watch deletes it right away, the synching process is not the problem.

    UPDATE:
I solved the problem thanks to this thread:
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?149042-Fenix-2-does-not-store-workout-says-quot-No-activities-found-quot
  • Garmin Express *IS* deleting activities!

Sorry, but this appears to be patently untrue.

Since Garmin Express (OS X, Yosemite) updated from the "old" style to the new 4.0.20.0, it's been failing to sync with Connect and deleting my activities. The FIT files on disk are truncated at 72 bytes. They no longer exist on the device. It's a 910XT, so nothing else is "on" it.

I see this in the Express logs:

I am... unhappy. Have lost a lot of training info through this issue!

Yes, I have demonstrated this with a short dummy activity. It exists on the device until Express "syncs" it, after which it's gone.

We will certainly try to reproduce this issue. My theory is that the Express updates have carried this setting from a much older version somehow. Since Express considers your sync's successful, there is a good chance that it copied the activity file to the location in this FAQ: Where are my activity files stored after ANT+ transfer to Garmin Connect? If you find the activity file in you can manually upload it to the Activities page. Use the Import link in the upper right. I will update this post with any additional information.

Thanks Curt - but as I say, the FIT files are all truncated to 72 bytes.

I think the connecting factor may be that the sync (upload) fails as my MacBook's wifi hasn't connected before the ANT transfer starts. So perhaps the file is transferred to the Mac, deleted from the device (due to old setting) and then some bug is corrupting the file on upload failure?

Let me know if you need me to email the logs.
