Finally Got Express To Pair with 910 - Won't Update New Activities

After feeling like I was trying to figure out how to properly jiggle the handle to flush the Garmin Express toilet in connecting my 910, it finally recognizes its existence.

However, I just did an activity. My ANT agent still was living in my computer and attempted to upload it when I put my watch down next to my computer (as is my habit after an activity). But it failed. So I fired up Express. It said that the ANT agent was hogging the connection and I had to quit it. Done. Then it said it went through the transfer process, and I saw the watch act as if it was transferring data, but the new activity didn't show up in Connect. I tried this multiple times, even removing both the ANT agent and Express, and then reinstalling Express. Still not working. It goes through all of the motions of a successful transfer, even telling me that it was successful, but the new activity is still not in connect.

I tried doing a manual upload via the button in Connect. It couldn't find my device (probably looking for the ANT agent that is no longer in my computer). After it locked up my (Firefox) browser, I tried a manual upload again. This time, it recognized that I owned a 910 (good - it costs a lot of money and maybe Garmin forgot that when designing the nickel and dime software). But when I went to upload selected data, the status bar didn't even start to move. I tried in Safari - no luck (not a browser thing, so no I'm not going to download Chrome to try it).

After having for the last few years a system that worked (not always flawlessly, but I knew how to jiggle the handle to get it to work), I've got a new toilet with more bells and whistles that I'm not sure even has a handle to jiggle anymore.

It's sad that all these new things Garmin is pushing don't even seem to be as good as the old Training Center that isn't even a thing anymore. Instead of a shiny new toilet that doesn't work, give me a hole in the floor that always works and I know what's going to happen each time I step up to it.

Any tips on how to get new activities from a 910 into Garmin Connect, via Express, every time? Or how about once in a while?
  • The only issues I've had with GE on my Mac is when I have it set to delete activities after upload. I've lost two activities as a result of that so I now have it unset.

To use ANT Agent you do need Garmin Communicator. I believe that is not the case with GE...but I may be wrong. So if you want to go back to ANT Agent I suggest you reinstall ANT Agent and Garmin Communicator.

If you want to use GE, I suggest you uninstall ANT Agent and remove the complication that it might be causing. Before you do, remember to copy your activity and history folders if you want to keep your activities.

With ANT Agent uninstalled GE works flawlessly apart from the issue with deleting activities after upload. And that might have been fixed since I last moaned about it.
  • I thought I wanted to use GE. I did remove the ANT Agent and it did not update my last activity (even though it showed that it had success syncing). So I removed GE and reinstalled ANT Agent and went back to how things were. I'm just wondering if Garmin is going to be no longer using the ANT Agent at some point, and I'll have to try all over again.

I had similar experience as SEEVERIST with my FR310XT - after installing GE the ANT indicates that the transfer was ok, but no sign of it on GC.

However no problem at all uploading to Strava - so now I am less anxious about loosing the info.

OK, I could try to uninstall ANT Agent - which I guess I'll have to in order to continue using GC - but I share the concerns that this new toilet is frustrating - why does Garmin insist on making these 'upgrades' when users appear happy with things as they are? Previous similar moves got me using Strava - although I still used GC for the Calendar and weight monitoring which I find better than Strava - but if the new GC & GE prove to be too problematic it might be a grand farewell to Garmin 'software'.

So the data must be going to the location that Strava pulls from (it isn't directly from the watch, since I've uploaded to Strava when my watch was turned off. And, Strava still recognized events that had been done prior to be wiping everything out of the watch to create space). But there are still problems with GC adding those activities. Right now I'm sticking with the "old reliable(ish)."

There are aspects of Strava that I like too, such as mileage on my different shoes as well as my bikes. Not sure if the new version of GC has that, since I've previewed and then went back to the old UI.

An update since I was here last time

After moving the Ant Agent to the trash and installing Garmin Express - there were still uploading issues to GC for the Ant stick however I found this solution on the Internet:

"When you start Garmin Express it showed me my ForeRunner 610, however the device fails to connect whatever you try. I finally decided to choose the option Remove the device from Garmin Express. Be sure to choose for the option to keep it in Garmin Connect from the popup that you get. At this point you can set your watch in Initial Pairing mode (Menu – System – Data Transfer – Initial Pairing) and add a new device to Garmin Express.

It should be found now and you can perform the suggested firmware updates"

Credit for this fix to: http://www.wickeddutch.com/2014/02/20/the-new-garmin-express/

    That fix worked for me.

However - Strava still cannot fin my Forrunner activities so I export the TCX file from GC and import that into Strava (for now anyway)

I had the same problem after installing GE. I followed the advice to "remove" my old 910xt but "keep in GC" I then started GE back up and it went into paring mode, found my 910xt, uploaded my last activity and voila! TX for posting the fix!
